Michigan Fraternity Kicked Off Campus For Attempting To Merge With Rogue Fraternity
Last Wednesday night, IFC at the University of Michigan decided to ban Delta Kappa Epsilon for associating with SIG, a current rogue fraternity on campus. DKE was hoping to merge with SIG in an attempt to grow their chapter size. IFC would have none of it and voted to kick them off campus.
From MLive:
At least two-thirds of the fraternity presidents voted to expel the group because it had tried to merge with a group now known as SIG, Krupiak said.
SIG was once affiliated with U-M and the national fraternity Delta Sigma Phi. The national chapter closed the group in 2002 because of “high-risk behavior and failed obligations to the national organization.” The Office of Greek Life said it continues to receive complaints about the group.
SIG apparently has a nasty history of hazing allegations and getting generally rowdy on the reg. DKE’s HQ is located in Ann Arbor, so I have a feeling that Nationals wasn’t too pleased with this, either.
DKE’s president was clearly shaken by the incident and wrote the following email to the Ann Arbor News, which MLive obtained.
“We, the brothers of Delta Kappa Epsilon, are tremendously disappointed with the result of (the) interfraternity council meeting. It was, and still is, our belief that the right to choose our own members is a crucial part of self-governance,” he wrote in the email.
“We will appeal this decision and believe that we have a strong case. The fact that the IFC came to this decision without a precipitating incident is extremely disheartening and calls into question the motives and values of the member chapters.”
DKE could be facing four years of not being on campus if they do not win the appeal. Now the only question that remains is: Should they go the route that the SIGs took and go rogue? There are pros and cons to that..

No way is hell will ∆KE Michigan go rogue. Hell, even International supported the merger. IFC is clearly out of line on this one. Good luck on the appeal boys,

10 years ago at 1:52 pmBy kicking off frat houses from campus these colleges are turning against their traditions. Greek life is a historic part of the College educational system. These (mostly) progressive school boards know they can’t achieve all of their goals while frats are willing to uphold their traditional values. This one reason why #GreekLivesMatter.
10 years ago at 1:58 pmNationals for fraternities need to start lobbying congress for rights to protect us against this shit… Other organizations are protected in many of these scenarios. Why not Greek life
10 years ago at 12:26 amAt Illinois, Betas got kicked off and a lot of their guys went over to SAE. SAE got on probation for some reason, but they are off probation now and seem to be doing pretty well.
On another note, it’s high time that IFC started being an organization FOR fraternities rather than against them.
