      “liberal arts

      noun
      1.
the academic course of instruction at a college intended to provide general knowledge and comprising the arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, as opposed to professional or technical subjects.
      2.
(during the Middle Ages) studies comprising the quadrivium and trivium, including arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, music, grammar, rhetoric, and logic.”

      Yeah, that’s so useless…

You just defined the classes I went to shit faced and passed with flying colors. If you actually have this degree then I am ashamed to even be communicating with you. Go back to school and get a real college education. Maybe engineering, business management, accounting, finance, education, law, medical, even nursing for all I care. If it isn’t useless..then please explain to me what you actually do with such a degree.

Not everyone can/should major in engineering, business, medicine etc. The world also needs writers, historians, philosophers, artists, i.e. thinkers. Society needs culture. The liberal arts are all about having an open mind, discovering new ways to view and critique the world, and effectively communicating ideas and emotions. You can use this in literally any field that you study.

English and history majors tend to get a lot of crap, and yes, it’s true that they don’t make make as much money as lawyers, CEOs, etc. But imagine how boring the world would be without books, journalism, movies, and people to study past cultures and pass on our own. Most importantly, those two majors teach people to think critically and write well, something most college graduates severely lack. Employers love it when people hold those skills.

As for me, I’m a liberal arts major, and I plan on going into teaching, as well as writing/music on the side. Plenty of liberal arts majors become teachers. If not, then it’s perfect for grad school, especially if you want to go to law school. Liberal arts majors frequently get jobs in fields such as advertising, politics, market research, public relations, publishing, and, like I said earlier, education.

So again, how is it useless? Why isn’t it a “real” education?

    4. Liberal arts has nothing to do with being a liberal . I’m an American history major with emphasis on the Antebellum South. That sounds pretty FaF to me

I’m a Political Science major with a concentration in Public Administration. It’s called a law school resume, kids. Liberal arts aren’t all NF.

Kitto, I hate to be “that guy” but your dreams and ambitions are greatly flawed. The best reaction your “degree” will get is a good laugh, or maybe you can work for one of those companies that turn recyclables into art… I can’t imagine the wealth you’ll accume. My antagonist attitude is completely derived from the fact that you’re going to be poor, sad, and lonely forever. But best of luck, I’m sure your “music” is outstanding. Idiot.

I don’t see how my ambitions of becoming a teacher or a professor are “greatly flawed.” The world needs educators. As for the writing and music, I’m sure I won’t make millions, and that doesn’t bother me. When it comes to those areas, it’s all about the love of the craft, not the wealth. For example, I’ve been in several bands that gigged frequently. Nothing too big, but we didn’t care. We loved music, and it’s a great way to relax after a stressful week of work/school.

Plenty of people have become successful with liberal arts degrees (George W. Bush for example). Studying the liberal arts teaches you writing and critical thinking skills that can be used in ANY job. Yes, you more than likely won’t make as much money as a doctor or lawyer, but most people who study the liberal arts do so because they love to learn, and don’t really care if they’ll only make 30-40K a year. That doesn’t exactly make it a struggle to survive.

There used to be a time when the liberal arts were widely respected. Sadly that’s long gone, as a lot of people in this country don’t seem to value education.

But seriously, Kitto makes good points and comes off as being intelligent when he writes. Better debater than a lot of the other illiterate fucks who comment.
