Nebraska PIKEs To Sleep In Cardboard Boxes For A Week To Support Salvation Army
If there is one thing fraternities are universally good at, it would be getting into trouble and being fed to the wolves. With that said, it is always refreshing and uplifting to see a group of fraternity brothers doing what is supposed to be one of the main aspects of fraternity life–philanthropy work.
The brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha at the University of Nebraska’s Omaha campus are voluntarily going homeless for a week to support the Omaha Salvation Army and their annual Just Can It food drive. They plan on living in a compound of cardboard boxes built by UNO sorority members in a mall parking lot for five days while collecting cans for the homeless. Last year, they collected more than 37,000 food items during Just Can It, and they aim to collect 45,000 food items this year. They have planned different events throughout the week, including Kick A Can and the Just Can It Kickoff, with the hopes of making this the most successful collection to date. The event started at noon today, when an Omaha city councilman and the chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Omaha made speeches to the student body.
If you’re in the area and would like to donate, head over to the Crossroads Mall in Omaha by Friday.
Well done, PIKE. Good luck with your event, and continue to show everyone the true meaning of Greek life.
