NFL Safety Boss: League Might Ban Helmets One Day

Here’s something that might be difficult to wrap your head around: football without helmets.

With the number of concussions increasing among current players and mental disorders such as depression, memory loss, and mood swings increasing among former players, the chairman of the National Football League believes in the possibility of a ban on helmets sometime in the future.

From BBC Sport:

“Can I see a time without helmets? Yes,” said Dr John York.

“It’s not around the corner, but I can see it.”

I fully support this idea. I always get super startled when those big men go crashing into each other like that. It’s all just so dangerous and scary.

Other ways to make the NFL better:

1. Make it two-hand touch and fine players who get too rough.
2. Take out kickoffs because they run too fast.
3. Give every team a trophy at the end of the season.
4. Cover up the cheerleaders because there are children in the audience for goodness sake.
5. Cover up players too because what kind of message do those gang-banger tattoos send inner-city youths?
6. Change the names of teams named after animals because it promotes animal abuse.

Please, Mr. Goodell.

These players that sue the NFL because they got a concussion are no better than the guys that use PED’s in baseball. They have known since they started playing football that you hit each other, and hit each other pretty hard. They know what they are getting into once in the NFL and the fact that they sue because of the NFL is “ignoring” he dangers or whatever is absolute bullshit. The NFL should invest heavily into safer helmets, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that these players know what they are getting into and in my opinion the ones that are suing are just trying to make a few bucks

This is an extreme case of helmet ideas, but you’re being dismissive without considering what lies below the surface of it. I’ve heard suggestions of going back to a softer, leatherhead kind of helmet. The thought is that switching to head gear that protects the head without giving the ability to go crashing into someone’s legs could lead to better focus on form tackling. Rugby players have far fewer concussions than football players, partially due to a need for proper form since they don’t have big helmets. Will it happen soon? No, but it’s at least an interesting thought. Gotta consider all ideas if the NFL really does care about player safety.

You get concussions from head to head shots, not usually helmet to knees. Also, rugby tackles aren’t better, they are different – they tackle behind the back, not cross face.

Do they not realize the reason helmets were added to football in the first place? 20+ players died each year from playing college football from 1900-1906 and because of the limited medical technology available at the time. Finally Teddy Roosevelt said enough is enough, and requires all college football players to wear helmets while they practice and participate in games. It’s because of this that the sport survived to the point where the NFL was created and improved in popularity every decade to now where it’s supplanted baseball as America’s new national pastime.

A reasonable safety precaution for the NFL to implement is some sort of protection that is designed to protect a player’s spine. While players don’t die from head injuries in game while they used to, there is still a tragic case every year of players being outright paralyzed from playing football due to back injuries. If the NFL or NCAA were to develop this piece of technology, it would have almost no effect on game’s speed, but would further protect players from a life-altering injury

At least LeBron James might end up playing football if that happens because then they won’t ‘hit to hard’
