Oklahoma State Phi Delt Kicked Off Campus For Paddling Pledges And Throwing Keg Parties
The news out of Stillwater, Okla., this morning is that Oklahoma State’s Phi Delta Theta has been kicked off campus until August 2016. The university chose to remove the fraternity after several violations, including hazing and alcohol offenses.
According to the Stillwater News Press, the fraternity was already on deferred suspension after it was caught paddling pledges, leaving at least one with severe bruises.
In a letter to Jon Rogowski, Phi Delta Theta’s director of chapter services, OSU’s Vice President for Student Affairs Lee Bird wrote, “At least 20 members, including the current chapter president, were identified as having participated in paddling pledges.”
One pledge sustained severe bruises from the paddling.
As a result, the fraternity was placed on deferred suspension, conduct and social probation Jan. 21.
The chapter was later busted for having multiple keg parties, and at least one member was reported for cursing at an intramural official during a game.
The fraternity violated the university’s alcohol policy April 17 and May 9 at a keg party. Beer was discovered on chapter property in February, and a member cursed a game official at an intramural game April 15.
According to a letter written by Oklahoma State Vice President of Student Affairs Lee Bird to the Phi Delta Theta national fraternity, many of the chapter’s biggest issues stem from members of the rising junior class. This factored into the school’s decision to suspend the fraternity until Fall 2016, which would remove the chapter until after that class’s graduation.
From EnidNews.com:
Vice President of Student Affairs Lee Bird wrote in a letter to the fraternity’s national headquarters that some of its members who would be juniors in the fall seemed resolved to cause problems for the chapter.
“There is no reason to believe that their destructive and detrimental conduct will change,” Bird wrote. “Given that those students will not graduate for at least two years, we have concluded that Phi Delta Theta will not be eligible to recolonize on our campus until August 2016.”
College spokeswoman Carrie Hulsey-Greene says fraternity officials have said they want the Greek organization return to the campus after their suspension. Hulsey-Greene said she is not aware of any individual fraternity members being disciplined.
Don’t be idiots, guys.
