Ole Miss Sends Football Recruit 54 Handwritten Letters In One Day
After Ole Miss inked a top five national class last week, including the top prospect in the country and two other five star players, many were left wondering what kind of shenanigans were involved. Ole Miss isn’t typically a recruiting monster, so after the ink dried on all 27 LOIs and the Rebel Black Bears finished above many traditional powers in the rankings, accusations of paying recruits, among other violations, inevitably began hitting the web. However, if recruiting efforts of the 2013 class compare to what’s going on with Clifton Garrett, one of the nation’s top junior prospects, Ole Miss’ recruiting prowess is starting to make sense.
The linebacker from Illinois already has scholarship offers from just about everyone in the Big Ten, including Ohio State, Nebraska and Michigan State. Not surprisingly, he also has an offer from Ole Miss too.
As evidenced by the contents of Garrett’s mailbox on Saturday, it looks like the Ole Miss coaching staff is really putting in the work. Here’s a tweet from Clifton Garrett:
Garrett’s mailbox contained 54 handwritten letters from Ole Miss. 54. All handwritten. In one day. Garrett apparently ‘grams, too. Here’s his ‘gram of all the letters lined up:
Hey Iowa, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Arizona State and Georgia, you just got totally outworked. Oh and ASU, that gigantic logo is just plain tacky, man. Shit is really off-putting. And why is that envelope so damn big? Did you send Clifton a poster? An SI swimsuit calendar? The mailman had to fold it in half just to fit it in the mailbox.
Okay, so are all these letters overkill? Well, yeah. This kid isn’t even going to read all these. The last 30 letters could contain Hugh Freeze’s family cooking recipes and Garrett would never know. It’s a statement, though. He’s not going to remember what the letters all said, but he’ll always remember that one day Ole Miss sent his 54 handwritten letters.
It’s a great strategy, but shit, how much time did the coaching staff spend writing letters? This is just one recruit. And these letters hit that mailbox on one day. I imagine the coaches all sitting around a conference table during a 14-hour letter writing party with upbeat music and boxed wine, just bouncing ideas off each other and scribbling away.
Let’s see if it pays off again.
