Penn State Football. NF.

Unless you’re in Hell Week or have been living under a rock, you’ve heard about the disaster in the not-so-aptly-named Happy Valley. If you’ve miraculously managed to avoid the unsettling news, let me catch you up. A report was recently released revealing a disturbing trail of events involving the Penn State football program. Basically, it turned into a bastion of pedophilia under Coach Joe Paterno’s watch.

Jerry Sandusky, former Penn State football player and long time assistant coach, is being charged with a minimum of 40 counts of sexual assault. Allegedly, Sandusky repeatedly fondled and raped young boys, and many times these acts took place on the PSU campus while using PSU football facilities. This shit began happening over a decade ago minimum, and despite a 2002 eye witness account by a Penn State football graduate assistant at the time, and current wide receiver coach Mike McQueary, the police were not informed. Not. Fucking. Informed.

McQueary, who suffers from a devastating case of Gingervitis and an ironically homosexual-sounding last name, walked in on Sandusky giving the business to a 10-year-old boy in the locker room showers. What’s the proper protocol here? Do you whip his ass and call the cops? I mean…at minimum you put a stop to it and call the cops, right? Well, according to the soulless McQueary, no. All he did was wait until the next day to tell Coach Paterno about the sodomy he witnessed. Paterno turned the information over to the athletic director, who then notified the school president according to the report. So, what did they do? They sat on this information. These sick assholes thought it was in their best interest not to inform law enforcement officials. They decided to sweep pedophilia and rape under the rug and continue to provide Sandusky ample opportunity to ruin the lives of more young boys for years to come. So far 9 young men have come forward in what has become a massive investigation and as a result, criminal court case against Sandusky.

Hey Mike McQueary, athletic director Tim Curley and president Gary Schultz, how have you been able to live with yourselves for all these years knowing you could have put a stop to this shit…and didn’t?

Hey Joe Paterno, you senile prick. Your legacy is forever tainted. You’re no longer the likable Joe Pa character we’ve all grown to appreciate. You put your football program above the lives of young, helpless, innocent kids. You are now a pederast enabler.

Hey Sandusky, have fun in hell you sick son of a bitch. Please don’t take the easy way out. You deserve what’s coming to you behind prison walls.

No humor to be had here, just a big “fuck you” from the TFM community to the Penn State University administration.

All of you are fucking stupid for condemning Paterno. Administration is solely responsible for notifying the police in order to lead an investigation, especially when Paterno didn’t even know all the facts at the time. How would Paterno know exactly what was going on, he didn’t even see it first hand, he heard it from that ginger. None of us know the whole story, for all Paterno could know the ginger might have just claimed the situation because he didn’t like that shit head Sandusky. Paterno did the right thing because he notified his superiors because he didn’t have all the facts because police are supposed to find the evidence from investigation. I agree Paterno should have done all he could to bring Sandusky to justice, but when your very own superiors don’t do anything about it what else can you do? Like I said administration has the only authority to notify police and start an investigation. IT DID HAPPEN ON UNIVERSITY GROUNDS AFTERALL. I want to make it clear that I fucking hate overrated Big 10 football, but I stand by Paterno. He is the only one that actually did something about it, not sure why any of you have not recognized this fact. To ask for his resignation is in poor judgement.

Jesus monster, you could not be more wrong. Legally and ethically they all had a duty to report what they knew and didn’t know to legal authorities. That old senile bastard had a DUTY to do more than tell the AD. Your statement that only the administration has the “authority” to tell the cops is astounding in its ignorance. And your posit that JoPa was the only one that did anything….wow. He did exactly the same as McQueary and the AD, he told the next guy up the chain, that’s it. The whole thing is sickening and they all deserve the shitstorm that’s coming.

Monster: How about his moral obligation to do something? Saying “Hey, it’s not my responsibility to tell,” is the same as condoning these despicable acts. It takes a special kind of heartless to hear about something so awful and just let it be. They may not legally be able to go after Paterno, but anyone with a soul can tell you that at the very least, not telling anyone was a dick move.

Anytime there is a criminal scandal on university grounds who evaluates the situation first. The administration. The administration then turns the situation over to the police. It happens at every university. Like I said Paterno could of done more and he stated that, but he can only do so much and he did turn it in. He did his part, could he have done more? Yes, but ultimately it is the administrations duty to carry out university affairs. When there is a problem concerning safety in the frat house who do you turn it in to? Risk Manager. You can take care of the problem yourself also but certain things can have limits which is what might have happened in this situation. Like I said we don’t know the whole story yet. I will gladly retract my statement if I’m wrong.
Harvey: You’re an idiot, he did tell what had happened. He turned it into the AD and administration.

13 years ago at 12:42 pm
    6. Success

Again monster, wrong. If there is a crime committed on a campus, the first to “evaluate” it is the first to be told about it. You know those call boxes most campuses have for women being harassed or stalked in the quads? Who do you think those connect to? The administration? Nope, the cops. If you are aware of a crime being committed like, oh I don’t know, the rape of a 10-year old, your ethical, moral and legal duty is to report it to the legal authorities. McQueary failed and Joe Pa failed. And Joe Pa did not tell the administration, he told the AD and then just ignored it. And please do not compare this to a safety issue in a house.

13 years ago at 1:53 pm
    8. the fratness monster

After thinking about it for a bit I have decided to take laps. I still don’t think Paterno should have resigned. Success, what you are saying is the person directly involved should have called the cops, which is McQueery. McQueery should have called the cops instead of just passing it along since he discovered it. Since he passed it to Paterno and Paterno was not directly involved in the discovery he had no choice but to pass it along as an allegation since he is a secondary source. Wasn’t comparing child rape to house safety, I was comparing how to deal with it. You deal with it as best as you can within your limits which I believe Paterno did. You can argue that since he is head coach he is directly responsible for his team but McQueery should have called the cops. I believe an AD is part of administration, at least that’s what my whole 5 seconds of wikiepedia research uncovered.

Monster, while I appreciate your quasi-backpedal, if a head coach is told by his underling that he just directly witnessed statutory rape from one of his staff, he is obliged to do more than tell the AD. Undoubtedly McQueary should have gone directly to the law, Joe Pa should have as well, and he should have told McQueary to do the same. He did neither. He told the AD and buried his head. Criminal activity is not the purview of any of the administration or the athletic department.

What you guys are saying is Paterno told the AD thinking he wouldn’t do anything. Paterno told him expecting action. Paterno did dismiss Sandusky from the team. Paterno should have ordered McQueery to report it to police. Let’s leave it at that.
Frattapaloosa, **you’re** a fuck tard that can’t read (or spell). I said that McQueery should have reported it to police.

Read the Grand Jury’s report. Paterno did what he was supposed to do. Additionally, the Child Protective Services Law says that when a staff member brings up an accusation of abuse, it is the responsibility of whoever is in charge of the institution to file a police report within 48 hours. If you want to blame Paterno for not calling the cops, go ahead and blame the damn Graduate Assistant, too. He did what he was told, and informed his superior. JoePa did the same thing. Is it a fucked up situation? Yes. But Paterno is an old-ass football coach, not Judge fucking Judy. Everyone did what they were supposed to do except for McQueary and the President of PSU.

13 years ago at 3:26 pm

Read the law, under the Child Protective Services statutes, Paterno is also “a person in charge”, meaning he had a duty under the law to report it to the legal authorities, so no he didn’t do what he was “supposed to do”. I’m amazed you guys are trying to defend this crap.

The majority of you are misinformed for blaming Joe Pa. I hate rape more than anyone but you guys are the types of idiots that after the fact point fingers and look for someone to blame.

At almost any University, the President and the Athletic Director tell their subordinates to report anything to them so that they can handle things internally. Once you call the police and they file a report the report is public. And whether or not the end of the investigation proves to be guilty or not guilty, much damage is done to the University and puts stress and negative publicity on it.

Joe Pa was told something from a grad assistant, was given no direct evidence, and the person accused was no longer on his staff. Joe Pa did what he was supposed to do. Do you crusaders think he was supposed to find the guy and arrest him himself based on hearsay?

If Joe Pa would have made this a public spectacle back then he would have gotten in trouble with his superiors. I don’t know all the attention is focused on him, I’d rather watch a public execution of the scumbag who was messing with little boys.

Monster, you are unbelievable. The bottom line in this situation is that as a man you must feel an obligation to see that an allegation such as this is immediately investigated by the authorities, not the damn administration. McQueary was obviously too big of a pussy to do what an upstanding man should do so he sent it to JoePa and JoePa lost his balls too and just passed it on to the next guy. Handle things yourself instead of passing on responsibility and washing your hands of a sticky situation protocal and administration be damned.

It’s called INTEGRITY. It’s doing the right thing, no matter who you piss off; No matter what rules you break or who you have to go around to do the right thing. In the end, can JoPa say he acted with integrity? No. He put his and the University’s reputation above protecting innocent children. He allowed himself to put football and University business above doing what any moral man or woman would do to chase down any allegation of abuse. If you saw or heard a brother in your house did what Sandusky is alleged to have done in any of our basements, what would you have done? I am hoping the answer is having the courage to live with yourself and put your house’s reputation on the line in order to make damn sure this was followed up on. Period.

I agree with fratness and southern. While there is certainly more that JoePa could or should have done, the rest of you are forgetting one fact. Sandusky was one of JoePa’s closer friends. What would you have done if someone that you don’t know very well (the grad assistant) told you that he just saw one of your best friends raping a 10 year old boy. Would your first action be to dial 911? I think it took a great deal of courage just to do what he did and inform his superiors. While I believe there should be a special spot reserved for Sandusky in hell and the administration’s inaction is damnable, JoePa should actually be commended for what he did do.

^ Booze you have a point, and Success if you knew shit about being a higher-up in a corporation, University, or government agency you’d know that you’re not supposed to go to external resources such as police or government agencies based on hearsay. What happened was beyond wrong, but Joe Pa was told something from a GA. He wasn’t shown proof, he was just told something.

I hope that rapist burns in hell, but blame should be put on everyone from the GA to the Athletic Director. If any of us would have been that Grad Assistant we would have beat the shit out of that coach. So it’s hard to understand that the GA would have just kept it in and told the coach a few days later. Stop being high horsed crusaders and treating a great man like the rapist should be treated. There should be a public execution for that fuck. But instead everyone is blaming Joe Pa.

the thing a lot of people are forgetting is that this wasn’t the first time sandusky was accused of this. paterno forced him to resign in 1999 (3 years before this incident) because of similar accusations. Paterno is also on the board of sandusky’s touch kids or whatever the fuck his foundation is called. to say that paterno did the right thing is outrageous. he didn’t call the police about someone who was repeatedly accused of raping young boys. if someone accused his good friend out of no where of touching a young boy i could see him thinking that maybe its not true, but after years of accusations of this, from both penn state and high schools he worked at with his program, he had to realize the man is a pedophile and that he was covering for him.

However, none of us know what really happened and if he was pressured by his superiors to keep it quiet and not take action. Or if someone else was in that, or a similar, position. I will wait to hear more information before I let a legend’s reputation get shot to shit for no reason. You say he could have fired him but I would think JoePa would have to go through his superiors to do that and he may have tried. No one knows. I want to fire him, but my superiors want to keep it hush hush. Fuck that, I want to do the right thing, so how about you send some cameras down to Happy Valley and we take this to the court of public opinion?” Had he done that, he wouldn’t have just been able to get the fuck fired and prosecuted, Pennsylvania probably just would have been outright renamed JoePassylvania in his honor. But he didn’t do that, did he? He sat on the info for over a decade all because some thoroughly replaceable administrators told him–the GREAT JOE PATERNO!!!!!–to shut up. See where I’m going with this? Joe Pa apologists are, in a word, fools. You don’t rape kids. You don’t allow other people to rape kids. If you think that there was a “higher power” for Paterno to report to, you’re a moron. Paterno owns (or should I say owned) PSU. Perhaps he didn’t have the balls to be the one to report his friend of 30 years to the police, and that is slightly understandable, but don’t insult my intelligence by saying that Paterno told the president to report him. If Paterno had told the president to do something, he most certainly would have. With great power comes great responsibility, which is a truth that I think escaped Paterno.

You cant blame Paterno. He did what he thought was right. These were allegations coming from a graduate student. Paterno did not witness the events himself. He responded quickly and informed his superiors. It is really Scultz and Curley’s fault for not going to the police and trying to sweep it under the rug. Joe Pa’s involvement is totally unrelated to the crime. It’s easier to make an example of him because he’s the big name. Imagine if Paterno did call the police and the allegations were completely false? Then you have a head coach calling out his assistants for a heinous crime that never took place? He witnessed a 60 year old man raping a 10 year old boy and decided that the best course of action was to go tell someone? How is that commendable? How was his first thought not to get the poor kid out of there? He witnessed this with his own eyes and walked away, letting that bitch of a man finish this disgraceful act. I would hope that the fraternity men on this site would have the courage to walk into that shower and beat the life out of that fucking bastard.

      Fratting Hard,
I would agree with you if the circumstances you described actually applied to this situation. In every report I have read, JoePa had very limited knowledge of the situation and didn’t know the full extend until the Grand Jury. Only one incident was brought to his attention and GA did not provide any details. So if one gets information that something may have happened on University property involving someone who no longer works for the University, informing the administration so that they can investigate and report to the police makes a lot more sense. I’m not defending anyone’s actions here, this is an extremely upsetting situation, but please get your facts straight before attacking someone who has also done a lot in his life to help children and his community (how many schools have a library named after the football coach?). There were a lot of other people, who were a lot more involved, with a lot more information than Joe and that is where I believe the blame should be placed. Joe has expressed that if he had known how the administration would act he would have chosen his course of action differently. The sad fact is that within most University systems the most important decisions are left to just a few administrators and going outside protocol is dangerous.

so if your sister gets raped and you know it but she only tells your mom and dad your gonna be ok with it bc they knew? Or would you say fuck this noise and take it to the police yourself? Joe is/was a great coach and has nothing to do with his coaching skills.

Is there a fucking echo in here or did you just really feel the need to make that shitty analogy twice?

No. Not mad, just confused. Why would I be ok with my sister being raped because my parents knew? I would never be ok with my sister being raped. I’m having to take some liberty and fill in some gaps because of your poor writing, but I think your point was that the parents weren’t calling the police? If so, what the fuck kind of parents have you had experience with? I know of no parent that wouldn’t call the authorities if their child was raped.
And lastly, JoePa has nothing to do with his coaching skills? That makes no fucking sense dip shit. The next time you feel the need to say something, please don’t. You’re embarrassing yourself.

    Joe Pa fucked up.

Some coaches have done some shit– Tressel let his kids sell rings for tattoos– but Joe Pa let his assistant molest little boys. That’s inexcusable. He needs to go.

There was an article on ESPN that listed all the specific things Sandusky did and it’s just appalling. One of them included a janitor witnessing a 10 year old kid pinned against the wall and sick-fuck Sandusky on his knees blowing the kid. Are you fucking kidding me? And there’s much more. Anyone who knew about this deserves to be drawn-and-quartered.

I still respect Joe Pa but I am severely disappointed in him and lost an incredible amount of respect for him, and he basically Barry Bonds’d his place in the record books forever.

Apparently there were several other eyewitnesses too. The thing is, you never know what goes through somebody’s mind after watching or hearing about something as sick as this. I think it’s easy for all of us to say what we can do be the study of the brain, our choices, and sociology has led to some sobering conclusions. The truth is, most people would probably be to scared or shocked to admit something like that happened. Most of us, including myself, would like to believe we would have kicked his ass and then called the cops. The truth is we will never know until we’re in that situation which hopefully will never happen. Those who do the right thing are heroes but crimes of this nature go unreported all the time for various reasons. If it’s just seeing it real quickly, then a person can repress ever seeing it. The kids were probably horrified and never told anybody till recently. Sandusky may have made a death threat to the different individuals. JoePa may have heard about this and was too afraid to do anything because he had a great relationship with Sandusky and may not have consciously believed it. I guess we have to wait to find out more and the judgement will come from the Court and God.

I had to make myself a damn strong whiskey ginger after reading the Grand Jury’s report. Sick fuck. I also agree with the comments saying that the ginger should have got the kid out of there and called the cops; I’m sure a football grad assistant in his mid-20s could easily handle a chubby 60 year old man.

I hate the fuck out of Ohio State. But what Tressel let happen under his watch is nothing compared to this. Joe Pa is gone after this year (unfortunate that this is the way it ends, but you can’t keep rapists on your staff) but this will impact a lot more than just the football team. The university as a whole is going to feel a huge shock.

Of course Paterno was a living legend up to this. But after you’re made aware that your defensive coordinator is a pedoass who raped a boy in a shower, you do NOT let him get away with it and continue running a boys’ football camp. I don’t care if he followed proper protocol, Paterno should have called the police when the university didn’t. What happened to those boys is more important than a million dollar coaching job and I share everyone’s disgust that he let it slide. Dick was right – Sandusky needs to have his balls blasted off with a shotgun. The death penalty is too good for that bastard.

That is the single most selfish comment ive ever read. Men go to jail for raping women all the time. Trying to bend this attrocity to pull attention to womens rights is disgusting. Get back in the kitchen you sad little woman.

I just realized you’re a girl. I thought you were some douchebag troll saying the raping of women is no big deal, so I told you to go to tell. Should’ve read your username. But still this column wasn’t the best place to bring that topic out.

As the sister (blood, not sorority, though I’m sure I have sisters who have been assaulted) of a rape survivor, I would never wish something like this on ANYONE, male or female. And I’m certainly not trying to take anything away from what these boys went through.

My entire point is that EVERY rapist deserves the punishment that this column and the commenters are suggesting, yet I have never seen the public outrage for a woman being raped like I am seeing with this situation. Rape is rape, regardless of gender. I just wish it were equally condemned across the board.

My sister, ex, and good friend are all victims of rape. Neither forms of rape are celebrated nor brushed off, this topic just happens to be current, all over the media, and very out of the ordinary. Not to mention it surrounds arguably the greatest college football coach of all time and it is posted on a website run by rowdy fraternity men. That’s why the outcry is much higher. Nobody said rape is accepted in any aspect. Those people will get what’s coming to them. I wish I knew who the motherfuckers were who did it to the people in my life.

Somehow through all of my reading/listening/watching all of this, I completely missed the point that the case is about children. And know that I finally get it, y’all are right, this was definitely not the place to bring it up.
I’m sorry. I wish there were a delete button so I could erase that.

How could you be that unaware of the news? Its on every station, radio and television, and in every newspaper? Fuck you, you just wanted to make a point, which you then realized, in hindsight, was an awful point. If Sandusky was raping college girls, it would receive the same amount of attention. So kill yourself still, you slut. I bet your sister wanted that rape, she is a dirty hoe as well.

If youre going to enter a debate about something as serious as rape, you might want to read the article attached to the comment thread before starting. Just a heads up. All action, no thought is no way to go through life maam.

Honestly, I thought I understood the gist of what was going on. Everything I was hearing was about a coach raping boys–my logic said it was college guys like his players or something. Yeah, I’m dumb sometimes. And since I thought I knew what was going on, I had little interest in reading further about anyone being raped. Once I realized I was missing a key part, I read a little further and figured it out. Given the circumstances, my comment was inappropriate, insensitive and selfish. I get that, and I’m sorry. Please ignore it.

And to “the piker”: I realized I messed up; I’m trying to apologize for it. You, on the other hand, are just a disgusting excuse for a human being, troll or otherwise.
