Pi Kappa Alpha At University Of South Carolina Found Dead

A member of Pi Kappa Alpha at the University of South Carolina was found dead in an off-campus house early Wednesday morning. The name of the student has yet to be released. The death has been ruled as “suspicious, but that there are no signs of foul play or trauma,” according to WLTX.

There are no further details regarding the cause of death at this time, but an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday. Sources close to the victim confirmed that he was in the pledging process. Kegs and St. Patrick’s Day decorations were visible on the porch of the house that contained the body.

The Xi Chapter has since been placed on administrative suspension.

From WLTX:

The Columbia Police Department and the Richland County Coroner’s office are both investigating the death of the student, who was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. Coroner Gary Watts says his body was found around 10:30 a.m. at a home on Lee Street.

The student has not been identified. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

The University issued a statement offering their thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of the deceased, and reaffirmed that, despite a number of rumors circulating, the circumstances surrounding the student’s death does remain under investigation by Columbia Police and the Richland County Coroner, and therefore identifying the student, or the cause of death, must be left up to those officials.

The national office for the fraternity issued a statement Wednesday afternoon say the USC chapter is on administrative suspension, and has ceased all operations for now. They add that the fraternity is cooperating with investigators.

“The fraternity’s thoughts and prayers are with the family of this young man and the brothers of Xi Chapter,” the group said in a statement.

We have been told that the name of the student is Charlie Terreni. It is important that all of us — regardless of Greek affiliation or lack thereof — send our thoughts and prayers to the Terreni family and the brothers of the Xi Chapter.

***UPDATE***

The coroner’s report has confirmed that the student who died is Charlie Terreni Jr.

Always sad to hear about stuff like this. Death is never an easy matter, but when it happens to someone like this, still a teenager with their entire life in front of them, it hits especially hard. Thoughts and prayers go out to this young man and his biological and Greek family, RIP.

This will hit the 24 hour news cycle soon. Not a good month for fraternities unfortunately. I guess when it rains, it pours.

The headlines went from “USC Student Found Dead In Lee Street Residence” to “Fraternity Suspended After Member Found Dead At Fraternity House” way too quick.

I had the pleasure of knowing Charlie and his pals. There really wasn’t foulplay, he went downtown and had an outrageous time and just overdid it. No hazing or anything.

I know everyone here is quick to hate on Pike, but man this breaks my damn heart. A horrible month for the Greek community.

I don’t think people are going to read this article will speak ill of Pike. Everyone knows that this is bigger than Pike.
