Put A Fork In The SEC, They Done
For seven straight years, from 2006-2012, we watched the Southeastern Conference win every BCS National Championship game. And for seven straight years, the SEC bandwagon has grown stronger in size and voice. You couldn’t talk college football without an SEC fan throwing in some statement about how dominant their conference was. “We win all the national championships,” they’d say. And when you asked them what team they rooted for specifically, they’d let you know that they were a Vol fan, or a UGA fan, or even worse, a Vandy fan. When you informed them that their team hasn’t won a title in those seven years, they’d just start thumping their SEC chests. That’s what they are wired to do.
But the fact of the matter is that the SEC has peaked. They haven’t won in two years. Their prized team, Alabama, was supposed to run through the overrated squad from Columbus, who had no business being in the playoff over TCU or Baylor, but instead, that Buckeye team ran through Bama’s defense like a hot knife through butter. Bama just didn’t look like Bama anymore. TCU crushed the second best team in the SEC in last year’s Peach Bowl. Georgia Tech made quick work of the next best team in the SEC.
Despite Bama looking for an identity, AP voters named them as the 3rd best team in the country in their preseason poll. In fact, a whopping eight SEC teams were voted into the AP’s preseason top 25. Of those eight teams, four are no longer in the rankings. An early favorite to represent the SEC in the playoff, Auburn, nearly lost to an FCS school and looks like an absolute dumpster fire. Tennessee and Arkansas are trash. Missouri doesn’t look good, and Georgia still has that one terrible loss still left to lose.
Six SEC teams still are in the poll, with LSU leading the way. However, wouldn’t it be fair to say that some of these teams are a little overrated given their schedules? A&M jumped into the top 25 after beating a bad, and ranked, Arizona State squad before barely beating a bad Arkansas team. Ole Miss jumped all the way to 2 after beating Bama, but hasn’t played anyone else besides UF. Hell, look at Florida. They are ranked 11th and have beaten New Mexico State, East Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ole Miss.
As it stands today, six teams (Ohio State, TCU, Baylor, Michigan State, Clemson, and Utah) sit ahead of an SEC team in the AP rankings. Let’s give that a little perspective, here. Should the champion in the four other Power Five conferences not named the SEC go undefeated, then you HAVE to put them in the top 4, assuming the SEC champ has one loss — I’m not including the chance that Iowa or Oklahoma State go undefeated because they are pretty overrated as well. How could a playoff committee be sitting there after the season is over looking at a 12-0 Sparty/Buckeye, 12-0 TCU/Baylor/OU, 12-0 Utah, and 12-0 Clemson, and think “Yeah, let’s throw in this one-loss SEC champ.” Let that sink in, SEC fans. Your hopes and dreams could rely on LSU, A&M, or Florida going undefeated.
Make no mistake about it, there is still some good football being played in the SEC, but to say they are dominant is no longer true. I think it’s time that we stopped clamoring over how great they are and judge the conference based on the on-field play of individual teams. There is a high probability that we see a playoff without an SEC team this season. Have the mighty fallen? Only time will tell, but all signs are pointing to yes..

9 years ago at 2:00 pmSEC may be the best on the field, but they are in no way the best at drinking in a parking lot
9 years ago at 11:28 pmLook, I understand that the majority of users on this site are SEC homers so I’m simply going to post some numbers and an observation and hope y’all don’t start down-voting me simply because these facts hurt the SEC perception. So here it goes: The biggest argument the SEC has made this year and last year against other conferences (but mostly directly at Ohio State) is that they don’t play anybody. What is interesting is that a hard look at numbers tell a different story. The SEC plays the lowest number of Power 5 games of any conference, and is 3rd highest in number of FCS opponents played behind the ACC and Big12. The B1G, whom y’all love to pick on, rank 2nd-Power 5 and last-FCS. So the SEC as a whole technically plays the easiest OOC schedule and therefore give all the conference’s teams a higher winning percentage which ultimately put more teams in the AP Top 25 – especially early in the season when rankings are more malleable rather than later in the season. So sure you can argue that you “beat up on each other during conference play” but ultimately, perhaps the tough SEC schedule that Bert and Mullen loved to talk about is really just as hard as any other Power 5, except it gets propped up by the weakest OOC play before conference play begins.

9 years ago at 2:35 pmJust playing power 5 opponents dos and make it a tough schedule. Rutgers is a power 5 team so get the fuck out of here and just look at sec against other power 5 teams. You’re making it harder than it needs to be

9 years ago at 3:28 pmThe whole point of posting this article is to drive click traffic from all the pissed off SEC fans that are going to blow up the comment section. And may I point out that it’s early october. Alot of crazy shit can happen in two whole months of college football.

9 years ago at 8:15 pmWhoever wrote this is a dumbass. Lets look at the Big 10, possibly the biggest joke in the power 5’s. Ohio State has sucked ass this year with one of the most overrated QB’s last year, Cardale Jones, the only reason they won was they were somewhat loaded and I am still one to say they didn’t deserve a spot, Baylor did over TCU AS BAYLOR BEAT TCU. Michigan State is the only other team who has been doing somewhat decent, both are not having great seasons and have had close calls. Then we have the PAC-12. Oregon was another overrated team coming into this year. The Pac-12 is trash this year. USC, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, Colorado, all are freaking jokes this year. Cal and Stanford are the decent programs if you even wanna call them that, and then Utah is your powerhouse this year. The ACC, don’t even get me started. You have mediocre teams barley playing .500 football at best. FSU is the worst undefeated team in the country right now, Miami and Georgia Tech are turning into a dumpster fires fast, and Clemson is honestly the only shot they have at a seat at the table. I mean Wake Forest, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Boston College and Syracuse are not gonna be national title contenders anytime soon. The Big 12 now. Possibly the most loaded conference this year, Baylor and TCU are your top two programs, they are beastly but I think Baylor is still the better program. Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, are all quality still. Your only real dumpster fires are the pathetic god awful Texas football team and the Kansas team. Other than that, the Big 12 does not get the credit it deserves. Yes ahhh yes, the SEC. Top talent in the country period. The only real dumpster fires in the SEC right now are Arkansas, Tennessee and Auburn. I wouldn’t even really call them that in a strong manner either. Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Florida are all still great programs this year. Mississippi State, South Carolina, Mizzou, and yes even Vanderbilt, they have a good defense and are making progress, aren’t half bad this year either and would still beat the shit out of a horrible Big 10 team like Rutgers. Right now, the SEC and Big 12 are your best conferences hands down. Whoever wrote this probably goes to Rutgers and drinks Mikes Hard Lemonade. Period.
9 years ago at 8:21 pmI am giving you an up vote simply because you insulted rutgers, the cesspool of the northeast. It’s the Alabama without Saban, the USC without smoke show cheerleaders.
9 years ago at 11:42 pmOSU and MSU are the only players in the B1G? Northwestern and Michigan are pretty damn good too. They hold the #1 and #2 spots on the Opponents PPG list in the country. Iowa is overrated but they’re undefeated. Let’s not forget the SEC doesn’t have anyone closer than 7 in the top 10
9 years ago at 9:28 amIf Florida State wins out they’ll have to be in the discussion, considering they’ve been able to pull out wins, albeit close wins over the last few years with consistency.
9 years ago at 5:11 pmSEC teams aren’t ranked anymore because they have to play eachother, which is a fucking gauntlet, that’s why whoever wins the SEC this year will be in the playoff automatically
