Racehorse Named “Party Till Dawn” Tests Positive For Methamphetamine

A racehorse called Party Till Dawn has tested positive to methamphetamine after a race meeting in regional Queensland.

The positive sample for the five-year-old mare, returned after it placed second at a race in Toowoomba in June, is the second horse to show traces of the drug in Queensland in just over a year.

Party Till Dawn’s trainer, Ben Currie, is due before the Queensland racing integrity commission for an inquiry by stewards in Brisbane next week.

My first reaction is to say this is a pretty messed up story. The horse isn’t able to make the decision to ingest meth himself. Someone does that for him. That’s animal cruelty, I’m pretty sure. You can’t just get your horse high as a kite to increase his chance of winning a race. It’s unethical, like juicing in baseball.

On the other hand, though, it seems like meth isn’t all that uncommon in horse racing. Just like in baseball, if your competitors are taking Vitamin S and upping their games, you at least need to consider doing it, too, or else you could get left behind. I’d 100% juice if I was a professional baseball player. I’d be leaving money on the table if I didn’t.

Party Till Dawn probably had the time of his life out there, too. When your entire life consists of oats and hay and running around a circle counter-clockwise, then one day you’re introduced to a hardcore stimulant, that’s a big day. Not the saddest story..
