Rain Delay Causes Twins Pitcher To Miss His $500,000 Bonus By 1/3 Of An Inning

None of you actually remembered that baseball is still in season. It’s cool, though. I didn’t either. As Derek Jeter wraps up his final season and escapes to a world of dimes on demand, the rest of his colleagues are just trying to snag every last dollar available in their contract.

The Twins’ starting pitcher, Phil Hughes, experienced the girthy dick of Mother Nature yesterday as he closed in on 210 innings pitched for the season. With just one out left to earn a $500,000 bonus, the rain came to play, forcing umpires to delay the game.

From ESPN:

It was the final start of the season for Hughes, who fell one-third of an inning short of triggering a $500,000 innings bonus in his contract with the Twins. The right-hander has thrown 209 2/3 innings this season; his contract stipulates that he would receive the bonus if he reaches 210 innings pitched.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters after the game that he will not use Hughes out of the bullpen this weekend. The former All-Star acknowledged that he is aware of the situation regarding his bonus.

Come on, boys. He’s been your stud for the entire season. This is how you thank him?

This could’ve turned into a great PR move for the Twins, especially as their neighbors, the Vikings, are marinating in their own ocean of issues. Instead, it appears as if Hughes will be forced to ride some pine as his half-million dollar payday disappears.

“I was very aware of it, but some things aren’t meant to be,” Hughes said, according to MLB.com.

Don’t lie, dude. We all know you have to be livid. If you feel the need to pull a Cartman on Gardenhire’s desk, nobody will blame you.

I agree with you, but it’s doubtful they care. These are the same people who can’t seem to even comprehend instant replay.

Instant replay is starting to be used in some cases. I’ve played ball my whole life and personally have never been a fan of it, since bad calls and the human element of umpiring has always just been part of the game. The only instance I think it should have been used was when Armando Galarraga had his perfect game taken away by a shitty call at first base.

Unfortunately, The Pohlads (owners of the Twins) are very cheap and won’t likely pay him. These are the same owners who claimed they needed a new stadium to field a “competitive team”. So far, the Twins have had a lower payroll than when they are playing in the Metrodome and have had only 1 winning season at Target Field. If they don’t pay him, I won’t renew my season tickets. It would be a pretty easy choice not to renew with the way the Twins have been playing the last 4 years.

Also, Hughes had 186 strikeouts and only 16 walks. That is the best Strikeout-Walk ratio in the history of the MLB. He had as many walks as he did wins. He 100% deserves to get paid.

Let’s just pray that the 95% chance of rain in the Bronx doesn’t keep Jeter out of playing his last scheduled home game tonight. Imagine all the tributes and festivities they have planned.

The argument for putting him in for one more out because when weaker when you realize he previously got bonuses for 190 and 195 innings.
