RIP Bretagne, The Last Known 9/11 Search And Rescue Dog

bretagne

This is the saddest thing you’ll hear all day. Bretagne (pronounced “Brittany”), the last known dog that was involved in search and rescue during the events of September 11, 2001, was put to sleep yesterday. This was the conclusion to the life of one of the greatest dogs that ever lived, as Bretagne also served in the disaster zones left by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

From CNN:

When it was time to say goodbye, she was given a hero’s farewell.

Firefighters and rescue workers lined the sidewalk as her body, draped in an American flag, was carried out. Tears streaked down some faces.

The golden retriever was 16. Old age had slowed her down, and it was time to put her to sleep.

While operating at Ground Zero, Bretagne and her owner, Denise Corliss, worked twelve-hour days for two weeks straight, looking for survivors among the rubble. Sadly, they did not find any.

Sorry to tug at everyone’s heartstrings this early in the week, but I couldn’t pass this up. This dog put together a greater body of work than most people I can think of, so it’s only fitting that she would get a hero’s sendoff. This is yet another reminder that dogs are truly man’s best friend, and will put their lives in danger in order to help out. Rest easy, Bretagne. Your job is done.

Ok not offensive to that dog because she is amazing, but like the actual last dog of the 9/11 attacks died 2 years ago when I read this article. Please take a break from jerking of Dorn and research the articles please

Sweet dreams Bretagne. Like a cat would have ever done anything 1/1,000,000 as cool as the things you did in your life…

After watching the video of them carrying her out under the American Flag I can say that it was one of the most touching moments I’ve ever witnessed.
