Senator Proposes Bill To Let Active Duty Members Drink At 18
For as long as I can remember, there has been the argument of “If you’re old enough to serve this country, you’re old enough to drink a beer.” That argument couldn’t be truer. If a man or woman decides to put on the greatest uniform this country has ever seen, then that person should also be able to throw back a drink or two.
Opponents of this will chant, “Binge drinking will go through the roof!” or “Drunk driving will increase!” To those people, I say get an education and stop being so whiny — it’s not a good look. One senator believes that lowering the drinking age is a good thing, at least just for those who are active service members.
From Military Times:
A bill proposed by Sen. Ron Young, D-Frederick, would allow active-duty service members who are at least 18-years-old to be served beer and wine.
The service member would be required to show their military identification at the bar or restaurant where they are being served.
While this is limited to beer and wine, I’m still all for it. Allow these soldiers to have a good time no matter their age. How could anyone be against that?
The Washington Regional Alcohol Program isn’t too happy about this proposal. These administrators believe that everyone should wait for 21, because they have no souls and are anti-America. These guys are probably the guys who were hall monitors, who always spout, “I don’t make the rules, I just follow ’em.” They don’t like change, even if the rest of the world does.
Thankfully, we’ve got guys like Ron Young. Young is just trying to give the people what they want. While it may not span across all American citizens, this is a step in the right direction. We can only hope that this is a stepping stone to a lower drinking age across the board..

Bring on the fake military ID’s.
11 years ago at 12:07 pmStolen valor isn’t the right way to get alcohol underage
11 years ago at 12:11 pmSadly, it’ll probably still happen.
11 years ago at 12:12 pmAs much as I hate stolen valor, if it was only someone using a military ID to get alcohol I wouldn’t care too much if they don’t go around taking credit for shit they didn’t do.
11 years ago at 5:02 amIf you pretend to be a military personnel, you’re fucked up, chief.
11 years ago at 12:11 pmdo you know how many bouncers are former military? a shit ton. whenever they get a military ID they will grill the ever living shit out of you to ensure that you arent posing. if you cant answer what your paygrade, MOS, basic training site, CO, unit, etc, they will make sure that you never make it inside that venue
11 years ago at 2:18 pmPersonally I don’t think this a good idea. Sure, when I was 18 and just stepped foot on camp lejeune, going out and getting some beer would have been really convenient and I wouldn’t have asked the older guys to buy me booze. On the other hand, when I had gotten back from my deployment and started getting boot drop after boot drop I can tell you one thing. All the new guys are incredibly stupid and irresponsible. They can’t even pack up their gear to go to the field let alone buy a car without getting screwed on an interest rate. Not to mention the handful that always knock up their girlfriends. While y’all might disagree me, I just don’t think this a good idea and will cause more problems than it will solve
11 years ago at 12:11 pmLace ‘Em up.
11 years ago at 12:15 pmYou comment, picture, and name lead me to believe that you’re a douche.
11 years ago at 12:38 pmThe brothers agrees. PreLawFrat, go fuck yourself.
11 years ago at 1:59 pmThe only other countries that have a drinking Age of 21: Indonesia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, (other 3rd world muslim hell holes).
Why is this even a debate? Every other country in the world that matters has a drinking age of 18.
11 years ago at 12:24 pmI agree, nothing good will come from this. My boots already had issues maintaining proper diet, add in that they can go to bars… shitshows will commence
11 years ago at 12:36 pmWhile you might be right, I don’t think you can pick and choose what rights you get once you’ve become what society has decided is an “adult.”
11 years ago at 12:37 pmFucking dumb ass marine. Soldiers are going to make stupid mistakes regardless. With your logic, soldiers shouldn’t be allowed to get married, have kids, buy a car, or run with scissors because they have the possibility of hurting themselves. And your forgetting that they are going to get drunk as fuck anyway so it’s better to be off beer and wine then hard liquor that is more easily snuck into the barracks. Be a fucking leader and teach your soldiers how to be responsible rather then take the easy way out and shelter them.
11 years ago at 1:32 pmwell fucking put
11 years ago at 2:15 pmI agree with you. I don’t think anybody can argue that most 18 year olds, whether in the military, starting college, or finishing high school, are responsible enough to buy alcohol. I do believe that allowing 19 and ups to buy beer, while keeping hard liquor to 21 and older, would be a happy medium between each sides arguments over the legal drinking age.
11 years ago at 2:16 pmWhile were trying to abolish the drinking age can we also leagalize cocaine?
11 years ago at 12:12 pmSites should offer discounted fakes for military personnel
11 years ago at 12:20 pmThat is the most horrid idea I have ever heard. Please do not reproduce.
11 years ago at 12:52 pmAlthough I whole heartedly support this, I still don’t think it should be restricted to only military personnel. In this country you are legally considered an adult at 18, so why do we give 18 year olds adult punishments, but not adult privileges? If someone can go to big boy jail they should be able to have a big boy drink. If we trust them to vote on the leader of our country why don’t we trust them to have a drink?
11 years ago at 12:21 pmI agree with your entire statement, except calling drinking a privilege. What you choose to put in your own body is a right, not a privilege.
11 years ago at 1:40 pmThe reason the drinking age is established at 21 is because medical research has found that at that age the brain has finished developing and growing. Yeah yeah lap me but that’s why
11 years ago at 1:46 pmWhich is a really fucking stupid reason because now they’re saying that a good chunk of people continue to develop their brain into their late 20s early 30s. What’s next?
11 years ago at 4:16 pmThe only real reason the age is 21 is because of the money they make off underage drinking. The brain bullshit is just their cover up.
11 years ago at 9:44 pmAnd 9/11 was an inside job, Vaccines cause autism, and the airline industry is in bed with the Govt to kill us with chemtrails…
11 years ago at 4:54 pmWe’re*
11 years ago at 2:55 pmLegalize*
Lap me if y’all want, but come on, man.
Fuck, wrong comment.
11 years ago at 2:56 pmIrresponsible people will be irresponsible people no matter of the law, so why not let these hard working soldiers crack a cold one at the bar?
11 years ago at 12:24 pmif you’re 19 years old and this country trusts you to call in a 50 million dollar missile onto a $25 mudhut i think you might be responsible enough to drink
11 years ago at 12:27 pm50 million dollar missile? The only thing that comes close to that is a Trident Missile coming in at $65 million, and those have never been used in combat because they’re thermonuclear and could provoke a nuclear war.
11 years ago at 5:55 pmyou seriously missed my point there dude….
11 years ago at 6:57 pmMy apologies, I have the upmost respect for the military. Laps taken.
11 years ago at 7:53 pmBullshit. The guys who call in aircraft aren’t fucking 19 years old. A 19yo may hold the laser designator on the target, but they sure as hell aren’t making that call to clear that aircraft at weapons release.
11 years ago at 9:45 pmYou’ve still missed the point here champ.
11 years ago at 6:06 amExcept that his point is bullshit. Those kids who are 18-20 aren’t making the decision on whether or not to blow up that building, they aren’t making the choice of blowing up that car moving down a deserted road. They are pretty much mindless robots, who go where they’re told, kick the down the doors they’re told, and follow orders. Yes, it sounds fucked up. Yes, it is fucked up, but that’s how it works. Sure, some set themselves apart as wise beyond their years, but 90% or more are dumber than rocks and have no sense of individuality. It’s do what this guy does, think what this guy thinks.
11 years ago at 2:30 pmWill ROTC count in this as well? If so it will have a substantial effect on college campuses. It also couldn’t hurt military recruiting numbers either.
11 years ago at 12:28 pmAlso there will be alot of douchebags out there making fake military ID’s if this passes. They should add to the bill that any fakes discovered will be looked at as espionage or something similar. Not just for security reasons but because they don’t deserve it and it would be disrespectful as fuck.
ROTC isn’t active duty military, in fact I don’t consider it military at all.
11 years ago at 12:35 pmWell they said anyone with a CAC card is a go, so if it passes you bet I’ll be using my privileges.
11 years ago at 1:43 pmPersonally, I’d love to see a dumb motherfucker show up with a fake CAC card and get destroyed by a vet.
11 years ago at 1:07 pmLowering the drinking age would greatly improve relations between fraternities and universities, as well as chapter-national relationships
11 years ago at 1:11 pmBecause no one on here has EVER gotten into a drunken altercation with someone from another house, right…?
11 years ago at 2:09 pm
