Greg Alia will be remembered as many things. A loving husband. A caring father to an infant son. A brave police officer who gave his life protecting his community. And to the brothers of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of South Carolina, he will be remembered as one of the men who made the best years of their lives possible: a founding father of their fraternity.

Alia was shot dead on the line of duty last week while attempting to apprehend a suspect. After responding to a report of a suspicious man in a mall parking lot, the suspect became uncooperative, and fled into the mall. Alia chased him on foot, and after engaging in a struggle, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot Alia.

The brothers of Phi Sigma Kappa and Patrick Walsh, an alumni of the fraternity, started a GoFundMe page to support the Alia family. In under a week, the page has raised over $185,000, just shy of the $200,000 goal. Donate here.

Founding a chapter is no easy feat, and it’s amazing to think that something Alia started back in college is now providing love and support for his wife and child after he is gone. The bond between fraternity brothers — the bond he established for so many men after him — is something truly special. Something that lives beyond the grave. A brother’s family becomes your family, especially in a time of need. And for this chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa, it is a family made possible by the dedication of Alia.

Just saying, I think Phi Sig normally refers to Phi Sigma Sigma, not Phi Sigma Kappa. They’re normally known as PSK. At least on my campus

University of Maryland. After we got kicked off in ’02 Phi Sig Sig came about and took the nickname. When we re-charted we chose to go by PSK.

As a founding father of a Phi Sig chapter, I can’t put into words how fucking incredible it is to see news like this after such a tragedy.

RIP Brother, Damn Proud from Chi Deut.

Being a founding father is one of the greatest challenges in Greek life. Building something from nothing and passing that legacy on to the next generation of brothers can be one of the most rewarding things in one’s college experience. Kudos to phi sig at USC to recognize the sacrifice and take care of a fellow brothers widow and children. THIS is what it’s all about. RIP
