Student Leaders Find Mad Scientist Themed Party Too Offensive, Pull Funding

It’s not too often we talk about dorm parties or Harvey Mudd College on this site, but this story seemed like one that needed to be brought up. It might be one of the worst pussification of America cases I’ve seen yet. Students at Harvey Mudd, one of the five Claremont Colleges located in California, decided to throw a “mad scientist” themed party recently, only to be told it was too offensive.

Like most parties, the theme was supposed to be a cute play on words, “Mudd Goes Madd,” a nod to the school’s scientific history. But the Associated Students of Pomona College found the name downright offensive to the mental health community. As reported by the Claremont Independent, they sent the following email to the party organizers:

The committee has decided against funding your event due to the following reasons:

After asking what improvements Mudd North Dorm would make in terms of making one of the first major 5c events of the year safer than previous year, [sic] the answer provided addressed none of the primary concerns, such as crowd control, atmosphere, and security.

We are disappointed at your choice of the name for the event, as well as your rationale for allowing the name ‘Mudd Goes Madd.’ Your disregard of the concerns of the mental health community and their allies trivializes the issues that we deem extremely important to our community.

Okay, right off the bat, you can tell how asinine this is. Whether it’s hosted at the dorms or not, never have I seen a dorm party need special “crowd control.” Here’s a tour of the dorms if you’re interested:

Considering Pomona students got angry after Forbes named it the No. 1 school in the nation, it seems like they could use a party or two every so often.

Even those in the mental health community felt the Pomona College student leaders were out of their minds on this party-shutdown. In an email to The College Fix, student Steven Glick said the following:

Students at the Claremont Colleges are tired of having their freedoms compromised in order to avoid upsetting certain groups of students, and the students that the PC police think they are helping are fed up with being told that they are too weak to hear certain words. We’re in college-people here want to be treated like adults, not like kindergarteners.

Harvey Mudd students pushed on with the party and even invited Pomona College students, even though their student government pulled their funding.

Huh. Adults like being treated like adults. Weird.

Every person I’ve ever met in student government is that kid who tried too hard to be the teachers pet in high school, and when that didn’t work, they decided that they should run for office to be closer to the administration. They always go along with the administration and never oppose it. I would appreciate it if one student government association somewhere would oppose the administration on something, that would be the act of true leaders, but instead they get used like the university’s puppet. Anyone in their right mind would see this name is not an issue, but instead they look for trouble where it doesn’t exist. It would probably help the school if they had parties, but I guarantee you this is a result of the administration wanting to want it’s students to focus only on academics so they can keep that precious rating of theirs up. It’s not even that good of pun goddamnit.

As a scientist I’m always mad so I see nothing wrong with this party theme.

As a fellow scientist, I can confirm. It’s why I always have a bottle of ether handy, a few sniffs and most problems tend to disappear
