Swedes Throw A Booze-Free Party, Because Why Not

Overall, the Swedes are pretty cool people. Sure, their lack of ethnic diversity makes their particular brand of socialism appear to be more viable than it actually is, but we’re not here to talk about socio-politics today. Instead, we’re taking a look into a recent nightlife experiment they tried in Stockholm. Comedian Mårten Andersson had recently gotten sober and realized that there was a real lack of nightlife opportunities for non-drinkers, so he rented out a nightclub and opened it up to everyone with one caveat: no booze or drug consumption allowed. This was even enforced by breathalyzers at the doors.

According to Maddy Savage, a writer for Sweden’s The Local, the crowd was an interesting mix of “curious teenagers joining former alcoholics in their fifties, clean-living yogis and breastfeeding mothers in their thirties.” Now, I’m never one to bag on sober people. I have plenty of friends who are trying to cut back. But if I’m being honest, this concept makes very little sense to me. Nightclubs are the worst. People go there to drink, dance, and try to get laid, and it’s really hard to accomplish the last two things without the first. And if ol’ Maddy Savage is correct, I’m not entirely sure that mix of people is the crowd I’d like to spend my Saturday night with, anyway.

I don’t know if I’ll ever get off the bottle, but if I do, I will never set foot in any place that resembles a nightclub ever again. But, apparently, people had a pretty good time, so I’m not going to judge. Have fun, Sweden..
