Don't hate the player hate the game, unless that game is soccer. Then hate them both. TFM.

I fucking hate soccer, and I don’t think it is frat at all. But come World Cup time, I am glued to my fucking television. World Cup is fucking awesome

well then you are just a hypocrite. support our players when they play club too. you want them to play for the US, in the name of our nation, you should want to help their league survive here. We lose good players who don’t feel like moving between continents for national team responsibilities, when they get basically no financial benefits from doing so. Support the MLS, and some of our holdouts in Europe will play here.

It’s not a hypocrite. I still fucking hate soccer. I can’t get into it. But there’s something about the world cup that keeps me glued. I’m not saying it’s a horrible sport and I’m not saying I don’t support American sports. But the fact of the matter is, the only time I will watch soccer is during the world cup. The MLS sucks to watch. If you hate soccer, you are going to hate MLS even more. Stop trying to make this a god damn debate over my own fucking opinion.

Well at least bring up the ratings for the MLS so they get a better TV contract. Put the games on in another room. Then I will take back my comment.

MLS will never be big. It will only become big if the teams get big time names from europeon leagues. But that will never happen. Until we grow our own 40 plus Landon Donovans to play MLS soccer, it will never be big.

    5. The Piker

In case you did not notice, even though I cannot stand him, we still managed to bring the most recognized athlete in the world to our league, followed by one of the scorers in soccer history. We also brought Landon back, got a well-respected Swede who used to captain the 3rd wealthiest club in the World, and are in talks with bringing Cantona to the MLS as an advisor to bring up league recognition. Now, the players may be on the tail end of their careers, but it is a hell of a start for a 15 year old league.

MLS might be making progress, but a couple of big names is not going to cut it. Most Americans only know the big ass names they see at the world cup on other countries’ squads. It’s going to take a while for MLS to grow here. Like I said. I never liked soccer. I’m not going to bash it since my favorite sport is baseball and a lot of people hate it as well. I just don’t ever see it becoming popular in the states. And I sure as hell don’t see it as fratty sport.

14 years ago at 4:21 pm
    7. The Piker

Acceptable approach. Its fratty in the sense that anything is possible with money. There are no limitations to the amount of players you can sign, the contact you can have with amateur players, and the amount of money you can spend. It also rejects perennial losers by sending them down to lower leagues, and brings up winners in lower divisions. Could you imagine how much more exciting baseball would be if the best AAA teams played for the right to replace the loser of a Marlins/Cubs series in the MLB? Once the MLS gets to that point, it will bring in more of the nation. Local clubs will have the chance to sign big names, and play against the best in the MLS, or at least thats the goal once they sign with the USL.

If you ask me, soccer is super frat. Get punch-drunk, rage, and get even more drunk. If you’re playing, win or lose, you get hammered. Sounds like golf, just a lot more exciting.

Soccer is for Euro-trash and third world shit-hole countries. It is beneath Americans to play that stupid God Damn game. Have you seen the geeds that run around the field – they all have gelled hair, not to mention the fact that they are foreigners. As Americans, we like games that have a definitive winner/loser. Last year, people everywhere had waited four years to watch this “sport” played on its highest stage. And what did they see? They saw America tie.. twice. Pathetic. After the two ties in the USA’s games, our fans just went on home – no winner or loser declared. I guess as a consolation, they were just told, “well, thanks for coming.”

Actually, we lost. We made it out of the group stage. 2-1 to Ghana, if I recall.

Love the game, but hate the ties. That’s one thing that really bothers me about the game. But what’s wrong with playing the most popular sport in the world. We should constantly be trying to get better so we dominate everyone else in the world at their own game. We’re the best at everything else, why not include soccer on that list? ‘Murrica!

Heel – you’re saying that most of the players in foreign leagues are foreign? Well holy shit. Who photoshopped you a diploma, genius?

Although that’s not entirely true, is it? Clint Dempsey, Tim Howard, Michael Bradley, Stuart Holden, Jermaine Jones, Oguchi Onyewu, Jozy Altidore, Carlos Bocanegra, Maurice Edu, Brad Friedel, Brad Guzan, and Jonathan Spector all seem to be playing abroad. Sure, there are fewer Americans playing in the top leagues than, say, Brazil, but there’s still a growing number of your countrymen over there representing American athleticism, and at ever more prestigious clubs. Seems kind of unpatriotic not to support them.

Soccer NF? LOL. last time I checked FIFA which is soccer’s governing body has way more money and power than the NFL, NBA, and MLB have. and dont get me started with the revenues of each team and their current value which are higher than any NFL or MLB team. Billionaire teams? TFM

    1. Brolysses S Grant

If you took the NBA, NFL, and NBA, which is 90+ teams, those 90+ teams would have more money, EASILY, than the top 90ish soccer teams in Europe. The top 5 to 10 teams in soccer might be loaded, but you forget how small those A-level (or whatever the fuck the top competition is called) are. You really think a mediocre Seirie A team in an Italian city of 500,000 has more money than a random team like the St. Louis Cardinals? No. Probably not even Pittsburgh Pirates or OKC Thunder.

Actually Piker they don’t. Their stadiums are shit quality, the fans pay only a few bucks to sit in the best seats. It is just simply entertainment for Greek, Spanish, and whatever other peasants there are from those countries whether European or Mexican.

While gays like Brolympus talk about the value of a team like Manchester United, what he fails to realize is that Man U is the only fucking pro team in the city. Meanwhile cities like Dallas, New York, or Miami have multiple teams worth billions.

Y’all really have to stop sticking up for this Mexican/refugee/Aids of a sport. It’s almost unpatriotic. Sure the US has a team, that’s only so we continue to HAZE the fuck out of other countries at their own sports. It will only be a matter of time until we start hazing the shit out of those Mexican Brazilians, Spaniards, and other gays that would be mowing my lawn if it weren’t for a fucking soccer ball.

@whiskey dick. Manchester City Football Club is also in manchester you stupid fuck. It also happens to be the richest team in the PL. 8 clubs in london worth over 400 million. 2 worth about a billion in arsenal and chelsea.

13 MLB teams are worth over 400 million. Only one over A billion though (guess who). These numbers are as of 2008.

      http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/how-much-is-your-team-worth-2008/

That’s just baseball. Meanwhile there are 5 teams in the NFL worth over a billion dollars. 4 of those 5 Billion dollar teams are from a city that also has an MLB team worth over 400 million dollars. The lowest, I repeat LOWEST any NFL team is worth is the Minnesota Vikings, coming in at a paltry $720 million.

      http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2568057

Please explain to me again how European soccer teams are worth more money than American sports teams?

There are 90 teams in the EPL system dumbass. Newcastle is worth about 300 mil and they played in the 3rd tier for two seasons this decade.

Also, how about the 112 Italian teams with an average worth of 325 million. Yes, not all teams are worth a ton, but go find a bunch of AAA baseball teams that are worth about 200 million. They have that.

14 years ago at 8:25 am
    10. The Piker

You used sale value of team only for soccer, but used revenue deals with the league and player values factored in with sale worth for the NFL teams you pointed out? Take into account the split television deals for all soccer clubs, their player assets, and their value rises dramatically too.

14 years ago at 8:35 am
    11. Brolysses S Grant

I’m just going off what the purported current value is, all numbers are from Forbes. NFL numbers aside you basically have identical layouts between the MLB and Soccer lists, both from Forbes.

There are 17 baseball teams over that arbitrary $400 million mark you set. There are 9 on the soccer list (probably 10 if you advance the numbers for 2011, although that would mean there were more like 19 or 20 MLB teams over 400m).

But please, give me one, just ONE link showing me that there are 112 Italian soccer teams worth over 300 million dollars. That is fucking laughable.

You’re wrong, it’s okay, happens to everyone.

    12. rainbowsociety

Piker: your numbers on Italian team worth, at least below Serie A, are COMPLETELY off. You literally just made that up. Their TOTAL value might, MIGHT, come to the number you gave.

It would help if you knew anything about soccer too. It’s well known that top clubs all over Europe have huge amounts of debt, to the point where Spanish and Italian players unions are going on or have been on strike because of unpaid wages.

Please stop talking. I watch soccer, I appreciate it, but I don’t feel the need to defend its relevance. Why? Because it DOESN’T MATTER HERE. American sports team are vastly richer than all but the top 10 or 20 clubs in Europe. Hell, our college teams probably make more than most clubs outside the top tier.

Soccer is cheap to play? not in the U.S.A. it’s a game for poor people in other countries, but it’s an upper-class sport in America because playing club soccer costs a shit-ton of money.

I will agree that soccer is an upper class sport in America. The best high school soccer conference in the country is all private schools, the MCC in St. Louis. MCC=FaF
