Texas Officially Approves Campus Carry, So Get Ready For Guns In Class
Exactly one week ago, I reported that Texas was one step closer to passing their campus-carry bill. Well, the bill has officially passed through the Senate (which wasn’t expected to happen) and is on its way to the desk of Greg Abbott.
From New York Times:
The so-called campus-carry bill is expected to be signed into law by the Republican governor, Greg Abbott. It would take effect in August 2016 at universities and August 2017 at community colleges.
One of the bill’s biggest opponents happens to be the Chancellor of University Of Texas System, Admiral William McRaven.
“I’m a guy that loves my guns,” Admiral McRaven said. “I have all sorts of guns. I just don’t think bringing guns on campus is going to make us any safer. If you’ve ever been shot at, which I have, then you have an appreciation for what a gun can do.”
The bill comes at a time when Texas also passed open-carry for all CHL holders. Open carry would not be allowed on campuses, however. For those who don’t know Texas laws, you have to be 21 to get your CHL. The amount of college CHL holders is probably a lot smaller than some people think. Therefore, the amount of students who are carrying will be relatively small.
Private universities, such as SMU, TCU, and Rice, will be able to opt out of the bill. Public universities will also be able to designate certain areas on campus as “gun free.” The bill also allows professors to carry and get trained.
Is it a good idea? I can’t say. I’ve never been faced in a situation where someone is shooting at people, and needed the ability to fire back. Hopefully, the presence of guns in the right hands will deter those with guns in the wrong hands.
Ready or not, here comes guns on campuses everywhere..

10 years ago at 2:53 pmTexas is a great role model every other state should follow
10 years ago at 2:17 pmThis is huge. Now let’s make it a national thing and watch the school shootings slowly fade away.
Fuck Obama.
10 years ago at 2:17 pmWill lower gun deaths not necessarily shootings. Just semantics.
10 years ago at 3:13 pmTo be fair, Obama has not really been super anti-gun. Sure he’s in favor of good security measures and background checks and stuff (which are already in place in most states), but he’s not out to take people’s guns away like some other Democrats.
10 years ago at 3:36 pmI’m sure if he had the ability he would. Every time there’s been a shooting he has exploited it for gun control. In other news today, a Muslim tried to behead a cop with a blade but no one is calling for a knife ban
10 years ago at 5:26 pmAs an aspiring Econometrician and human behavioral ecologist, I’d postulate, not only did Obama never want to ban or restrict firearms, rather, to the contrary, he actively wants Americans to arm themselves. Why, you ask? Well, he’s got dozens of economic advisers under him, and any one of them worth their salt would tell him that every time he pushes baseless and impossible gun legislation, especially of the executive order nature, he puts 10 or 20 million more firearms in the hands of private citizens. So, either he is completely retarded, which is unlikely, given his eloquence and his J.D. from Harvard, or he is surreptitiously trying to arm Americans. As an avid gun owner, and an NRA pistol instructor, my hat’s off to him, it’s never been easier or cheaper (compared to COL) to acquire reliable and state of the art firearms as a law abiding citizen.
10 years ago at 2:39 pmTo be fair, Obama did cause the largest boom the gun market has seen in years, because people were scared he was going to crack down on them. Not really for or against gun control, but I think it’s fair Obama isn’t really at fault for any gun legislation.
10 years ago at 7:59 pmThe Missouri Chancellor should have thought of this to stop sexual assaults.
10 years ago at 2:19 pmHe was A&M’s president just a year and a half ago. This fact still doesn’t validate your attempt at humor
10 years ago at 3:03 pmThis is such a stupid bill.
10 years ago at 2:19 pmYou are such a stupid person
10 years ago at 3:20 pmWho do you know here?
10 years ago at 3:22 pmYour father should’ve just shot you into a sock instead of spilling his seed into your whore of a mother, Holt.
10 years ago at 3:23 pmI’m all for 2nd amendment rights on the state level but I have a bad feeling about this. It only takes one instance for this to be abused and it falls under the national spotlight where liberals will try to use it as an excuse to further constrict 2nd amendment rights on a national level.
10 years ago at 2:24 pmIt hasn’t been abused yet in Colorado…
10 years ago at 3:57 pmCould end up badly. If one person fucks up, Democrats will have a field day.
10 years ago at 2:35 pmIs Texas as amazing as it seems?
10 years ago at 3:04 pmIt seems like a beautiful state of freedom in this insane pussy country.
10 years ago at 3:05 pmIt is. Beers colder, women are hotter, and we do the exact opposite of whatever the democrats try to pass.
10 years ago at 3:12 pmMy god. Why was i born in new york
10 years ago at 3:59 pmCause you’re a pussy
10 years ago at 6:44 pmjust recently a man in TX received no charges after beating some scum to death after walking in on him raping his daughter. don’t think many other states would’ve came to the same solution. Texas has my respect
10 years ago at 3:16 pmliberals keep trying to paint this as a gun-slingin-wild-west thing but the law still requires permits, which means no, not any idiot can just walk around with a gun.
10 years ago at 3:10 pmThere are tons of idiots walking around with guns, permits or otherwise. Thats why it’s better to get more non-idiots to have them
