Texas Takes One Step Closer To Allowing Students To Carry Concealed Guns On Campus

Campus carry has been widely debated across the nation. Should students with their CHL be allowed to carry their concealed handgun on campus? Currently, in Texas, a CHL holder is allowed to carry a concealed handgun only in public places, such as the quad. The Texas government is looking to change that to allow students to carry them in campus buildings and dorms.

Senate Bill 11 was put to a vote in the House last night right before a midnight deadline. The results were heavily favored in the “yes” end of the spectrum.

From Houston Chronicle:

With a midnight deadline to pass Senate bills looming, the House approved the legislation by a vote of 101-47. The vote was triggered when lawmakers, who had filed more than 100 amendments to the bill, agreed to pull them down after the bill was amended to a point amenable to both Democrats and Republicans.

The bill would require both private and public institutions to implement the law. It also allows each campus to determine exactly where concealed handguns would be allowed on campus. The bill will go through House approval one more time before being sent to the Senate.

What do you think? Should students with CHLs be allowed to carry concealed handguns on campus?

A similar law was passed in Idaho last year, no incidents yet… But maybe that has to do with the fact only 21yo can get conceal carry-or less than a third of the student body.

While I agree that they would make campuses safer, the majority of college students don’t know how to handle a gun and much less use one if they had to. College campuses are about the only place that it wouldn’t be a good idea.

As someone who has a CCW permit, sometimes I forget that my pocket pistol is in my pants. If I’m legally allowed to carry ten feet from campus why the fuck can’t I carry on campus? No one has had a good answer to that question yet.

I’m all for the right to carry but seriously? What good can come of this

I hope MS legalizes campus carry. CCL holders have to go through firearms training with an NRA recognized instructor to obtain the CCL, so I think that ensures that only responsible, educated students will legally carry.

Utah is currently the only state that allows total concealed carry anywhere on campus, and I love it. There was an attack threat on campus this year, and nobody even flinched. In every class I have I can see at least one person carrying, and I’d rather see that and know someone is there to shoot back than let some psycho have unchallenged reign on campus if things ever go way south.
