I respect this and all, but medicine isn’t old money. You don’t start old money by becoming a doctor. That’s perfectly fine and worthy of praise, but it needs to be cleared up that old money, by definition, is multigenerational. Doctors are members of the professional class, which is new money. And being old money has to do entirely with breeding. Someone is still old money to this day if they’re piss poor, as long as they continue to be upper class and have roots in inheritable success. Most old money planters ended up broke after the War, but if you’re descended from a Confederate general and you’ve been raised in the old way, you’re still old money. It’s very different from being fratty. Most fratstars are new money and there isn’t anything inherently wrong with that, but this needs to be clarified.
I think he’s saying that it doesn’t start old money because old money has to be big enough to be passed on and doesn’t require a skill. Doctors can’t really accumulate that much money. They can make it easier for their children to do it, but they haven’t established the reserve for old money yet. And if the kids a doctor and so on, then the family’s just well-off forever, but it isn’t old money. He’s being reasonable.
This TFM is amazing! Being a first generation greek as well, I understand. Gentlemen who are smart and ambitious are the absolute best kind. I sincerely admire what you are doing, the absolute best of luck to you.
