The 10 Best Will Ferrell Movies

As any red-blooded American man knows, a new Will Ferrell movie is always a special occasion. Let’s look back on the modern comedy icon’s best work to date.

10. Blades Of Glory

Poor Jon Heder. He exploded into a cultural phenomenon with Napoleon Dynamite but then seemingly disappeared into thin air like a lanky Hollywood Bigfoot, but not before buddying up with Ferrell in this hilarious ice-skating flick in ’07. Ferrell is great at playing arrogant morons and he’s in full force here. Nick Swardson is great in it, too.

9. Stranger Than Fiction

One of Ferrell’s few steps into more dramatic territory, this 2006 flick is insanely underrated with a clever plot. He plays a normal dude with a normal life until he starts hearing a narrator in his head describing everything he does. As funny as the plot is, it gets surprisingly serious and emotionally powerful, and Will has got some great dramatic chops. He should put on his serious face more often.

8. The Campaign

The premise alone makes this a winning formula from the jump. Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis play 2 dudes running for congress against each other. The movie has aged weirdly because it no longer feels that far-fetched in the era of Trump. Politicians hurling vulgar insults at each other no longer feels like a fantasy. But seeing Will Ferrell accidentally punch a baby will always be worth the price of admission.

7. Daddy’s Home

An underrated gem that seemingly no one talked about. Will Ferrell is great at playing egomaniacs, but he’s also great at playing the overly friendly everyman, a role he fits into perfectly here. It’s definitely not clean, but even during its somewhat raunchier parts it has a comfortably wholesome vibe. Hannibal Buress actually steals the show.

6. Old School

It’d be blasphemy to not put this on the list, but Old School deserves its classic status. One of the best “frat comedies” to ever grace our screens. I may get arrested or even executed for saying this, but I think this movie is honestly even better than Animal House. Don’t @ me.

5. The Other Guys

This movie doesn’t get the respect it deserves. It gets overshadowed by Ferrell’s other Adam McKay collaborations which is a damn shame because it’s painfully funny. Ferrell and Wahlberg have a perfect ying and yang comedic chemistry. Combine that with a bulletproof script (and Michael Keaton) and you got one of the funniest movies of the 2010s.

4. Talladega Nights

It’s the first glimpse of what a great duo Ferrell and John C. Reilly really are. It also has Sacha Baron Cohen and Jane Lynch, what more do you need in life? This movie did the impossible. It made us forget about how much NASCAR sucks for 108 minutes. Incredible.

3. Zoolander

Obviously the spotlight is on Ben Stiller here, but Ferrell gives a scene stealing, over-the-top performance as one of the most memorable characters of his career. My hope is that if we watch this on a loop enough times the sequel will somehow stop existing. A boy can dream.

2. Step Brothers

The fact that this movie is almost a decade old now makes me feel old AF. Still makes me laugh as hard as the day it came out. Me and my sister quoted this movie 24/7 for at least 6 months after we saw it in the theater. There have been rumors of a sequel, which would be cool but I honestly think it’d be perfect if they just left this classic the way it is.

1. Anchorman

What the hell did you expect? Yes, this is the safest and most cliché choice, but that’s because it’s the right one. Anchorman is an absolute classic and Ron Burgundy is an American hero if there ever was one. Every man is somehow born knowing every quote from this without even seeing it. The sequel is actually really funny, too. It’s kind of a big deal..
