The Boston Herald Published An Overtly Racist Barack Obama Cartoon This Morning
Sometimes, we’re all left wondering what the hell goes through the minds of the people in charge of our nation’s media-sphere when they publish or say egregious things that can only be construed as stupidity. Like, the kind of stupidity that makes you wonder how these people in question could have even landed their prestigious editorial or production jobs in the first place.
Case and point: this cartoon published in this morning’s Boston Herald.
Racial overtones in this morning’s Holbert political cartoon in the @bostonherald. #wbz pic.twitter.com/zXLgDIMC4O

From Talking Points Memo:
The cartoon by renowned cartoonist Jerry Holbert and printed in Wednesday’s newspaper was accompanied by the caption: “White House Invader Got Farther Than Originally Thought.” It showed President Obama brushing his teeth while the uninvited guest sat in the tub over his shoulder. As the intruder sudsed up, he asked Obama whether he’d “tried the new watermelon flavored toothpaste.”
Now, I’m no genius, but common sense tells you that anyone who passed his or her eighth grade social studies class could tell you that the above cartoon certainly wouldn’t resonate well across the board for the Herald’s readership. Seriously, given the history of racial dynamics in our nation–and not to mention, the recent contention regarding events that have been in the news–a grain of common sense would tell you that the watermelon reference is overtly racist, drawing on a long-held stereotype.
Holbert, himself, responded to the criticism his cartoon received during an appearance Wednesday on the Boston Herald’s talk radio show.
He told the hosts that he had “no intention at all of offending anyone” and that he doesn’t “think along the lines of racial jokes.” While he acknowledged that his jokes can be “naive” or “stupid,” he said he was definitely not racist. He repeatedly emphasized that he “wasn’t thinking of the racial element” when he used watermelon toothpaste.
“I was thinking of myself,” he said. “I really like watermelon.”
Honestly, there have to be what, maybe ONE MILLION other flavors of toothpaste the pictured “White House intruder” could have referenced? But no, it had to be watermelon, which would probably racially resonate the same as saying the toothpaste was fried chicken or grape soda flavored. Outright moronic.
Maybe this was a mindless transgression by the artist–I admittedly know nothing about him–and maybe he really does like watermelon, but there’s still no excuse for this cartoon making it across the desks of what I assume to be multiple editors at the Herald, and eventually being printed.
While the Boston Herald’s editors have released a statement saying they “sincerely regret if we inadvertently offended anyone,” the question that really needs to be asked is WHERE THE FUCK IS THEIR COMMON SENSE? A 14-year-old is capable of better editorial judgment..

How about we discuss ABC’s new show called “Black-ish.” When’s the article on that coming out?

11 years ago at 4:21 pmWe get it. You guys don’t like racism. 11 years ago at 5:35 pmI like that Ashley Schaeffer wrote this article. If you didn’t know Ashley Schaeffer is a racist car dealer on Eastbound and Down played by Will Ferrell who lives on an antebellum plantation and owns slaves and uses them for his amusement in modern day North Carolina. You should watch it it’s pretty funny. Kinda like how this writer fabricates a story about watermelon to make it seem racist just so that he can say that he’s a contributing columnist on TFM. Way to use black people for your personal gain bud because that’s totally not racist I like how you threw in that fried chicken and grape soda jab for good measure yeah your a real civil rights hero and stereotypes exist because they’re true dumbass for example if your a contributing writer for TFM you’re a shitty writer that writes midweek less than a page articles about cartoons in real newspapers. We got a real winner over here fellas. TFM should stick to rush boobs and tinder pickups.

11 years ago at 7:40 pmJeopardizing your career, employer’s reputation and your life for a mildly funny cartoon.. Blacks are the real winners here.
11 years ago at 4:57 pmFuck it. Shits funny, don’t get fuckin butt hurt cause anything and everything is viewed as not politically correct anymore. Well fuck that shit and fuck you Obama!
11 years ago at 4:57 pmWell… HAS he tried the watermelon flavored toothpaste?
11 years ago at 5:50 pmWhy do I keep coming back to this site…
11 years ago at 6:51 pmAnyone else think it was supposed to be racist because of how the ears were drawn?
11 years ago at 6:54 pmWhen started going to this site, years ago, it was truly a blessing, a college humor website that didn’t make a Fox News or GOP joke in every article. For once I found a group of like minded, Young Republicans that shared my ideals (extending beyond the fact that I’m a Fraternity man.) Now almost every day I look at this site some youngin’ who I’ve never heard of (I know this guy’s been around for a while this is several months of pent up anger in one post) posts another Left leaning piece of shit article. Stick to your demographics and leave the liberal horse shit to Cracked, Huffington, and Jezebel. You’re better than this TFM.
