The Champ’s MLB Division Previews: AL East

Long before I was making Dorn and Bacon’s columns look like cave drawings, I was a pretty goddamn good baseball blogger… and I still am. In fact, the reason I was brought on board was to write sports columns. This is the first of six division previews from now until opening day to satiate your desire for the Great American Game. We’ll start with the American League (because it has the best name). Today, it’s the AL East.

Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles are on rough times… again. It seems as if their attempt at a rebuild has fallen flat on its face. But there’s still some pieces there that make you wonder. Brian Matusz was as big of a prospect as anyone in baseball until he got injured. There‘s some optimism surrounding the Orioles with catcher Matt Wieters and Matusz, but they play in the AL East. I can’t spend much more time on these guys. They’re one of the worst run organizations in baseball and it’s going to be another season in the basement for the O’s. Get your shit together, Baltimore.

65-97, 5th in the AL East

Boston Red Sox

Oh how the mighty have fallen… well not really. The Red Sox might find themselves in an odd situation this year. Yeah, I get the whole beer and chicken fiasco in September last year, but really? Fire Theo Epstein? The guy who won you two (TWO) World Serieseses? The Red Sox are a class org, and I understand there were probably other circumstances as to why they fired Theo and Terry Francona. Before you get all up in arms about Francona, realize this: Francona was one of the worst managers when it came to Pythagorean winning percentage in the last five years (Pythagorean winning percentage calculates how many games a team should win. Nerd stuff. Amazingly, Tito and the Sox should have won more games in the last five seasons, but didn’t. Too much beer and chicken, I suppose).

The Sox have an aging team with a pretty good rotation and one of the best lineups in the AL. The AL East is a juggernaut and the Sawx might find themselves falling from grace this season.

85-77, 4th in the AL East

New York Yankees

The Evil Empire was at it again this offseason… oh wait, no they weren’t. The Yankees absolutely were big winners this winter, trading uber-prospect Jesus Montero to Seattle for Michael Pineda, straying from their big spending ways and doing some old-fashioned wheeling and dealing. The Yanks unloaded some of A.J. Burnett’s awful contract to the Pirates, where he was immediately struck in the face by a fastball during a bunting drill (NLol). The Bronx Bombers return a ridiculously good rotation (with the addition of Pineda) and an aging, yet still stellar lineup. Not much else to say here. The Yanks will be the Yanks again.

95-67, 1st in AL East

Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays do it right. Homegrown players, great trades, lock up their own. They’re a model of how a “small-market/low budget” team should operate. Add young lefty Matt Moore to their rotation and you’ve got the recipe for an upset in the AL East. Joe Maddon may just be the coolest damn manager in the show, he’s pretty good at his job, too. Their rotation gives me the heeby jeebies. Chock full of young studs anchored by James Shields and followed by David Price, Jeremy Hellickson, Moore and Wade Davis. Those guys might just be the best young rotation ever assembled. This is not hyperbole. Oh yeah, they still have Evan Longoria, Desmond Jennings, Ben Zobrist and Matt Joyce in their lineup. Never sleep on Tampa.

93-69, 2nd in AL East, 1st in AL Wild Card

Toronto Blue Jays

Our neighbors to the north have been quietly building the best team no one seems to be talking about. Stacked lineup, solid rotation, good bullpen. It’s a team that can beat you on any given night. Only problem is, they play in the AL East. If they played in any other division (maybe with the exception of the AL West or NL East), they would be serious contenders. Jose Bautista should have been the AL MVP last year. Damnit, if they didn’t play in Canada they might be my favorite team outside of my hometown Royals (don’t laugh).

But alas, the Jays just don’t have the horses quite yet. They stack up with every other team in the league. Unfortunately, they play in the same division as the two other best teams in the AL. Sorry Canada, America is better than you once again, even Florida.

87-75, 3rd in AL East

Do you really think the D-backs and Brewers are going to be better than the Marlins?

13 years ago at 6:12 pm
    2. Shut Up Whore

^This. The Brewers lost Fielder, and Braun will be shit this year without steroids. Marlins have made some good moves, and they will probably take WC #2. They won’t make it out of the first round though – still need some pitching work. But in a couple years they’ll be legit contenders.

    3. FrAt I aM

^These. The Diamondbacks don’t have a good enough rotation to compete in the NL. Kennedy’s breakout year was a fluke, plus with the Marlins signing Reyes, your ignorant to think the D-Backs have a chance

13 years ago at 6:34 pm
    4. FrattingOutLoud

^They still have the same team that won the World Series minus those two. With Wainwright and Carpenter our rotation is still intact. Adding Beltran will help bolster the middle of the line up to help try and replace Pujols and our bullpen is still solid. See ya in October.

13 years ago at 6:55 pm
    5. Rob Fox

The Braves will be better than both the D-Backs and the Brewers. Potentially the Phillies as well, but I won’t get my hopes up on that one.

    6. carolinahaze

^Pujols alone was worth 5-6 wins to the Cards last year. Take away him and LaRussa (one of the greatest managers of all time), and they will simply not be a contender this year. Sorry, but your boys are headed to rebuilding mode.

^All I can say is fair enough, we’ll see. Ready for the season to start regardless.

We won the World Series without Wainwright and so far he is look great in spring training. Also, despite the 3 hr game Pujols did decent.

    9. Costa_Del_Mar

Braves have the scariest bullpen in the bigs with Venters and Kimbrel, they will be WC in the NL along with the Marlins, not the Brewers or DBacks.

    10. More Frat Than You

I’m sorry but I’m not buying into the Marlin hype. I’ve never liked Ozzie Guillen as manager and we both know that Hanley, Reyes and Zambrano all have attitude problems and Guillen’s presence will just make it worse. Also, the Giants still have 0 offense besides Sandoval so I see the Rockies taking the west, not San Fran. The D’Backs could easily win the wild card again (they had a 93 win season last year) But there is no way the Brewers are winning the wild card. They lost Fielder and downgraded at short by adding Alex Gonzalez. Take it from a huge Braves fan, he has a stellar glove but a special needs kid could be more productive at the plate than him.

      1) The Giants have significantly improved their offense – Posey and Sanchez will be back from injury, and Cabrera and Pagan will beef up the middle of the order. Their offense still won’t be great, but it will better than it was in 2010 or 2011 (which is all they need considering they still have the best overall pitching staff in baseball). Also their bats have looked pretty impressive in ST thus far (they currently have the best team BA in either league).
      .
      2) The Rockies? Are you fucking serious? Give me a break. Yeah, they’ve got Tulo and a decent outfield, but their pitching is a joke. No way in hell do the Rockies make the playoffs. They’ll be lucky to even have a winning record.
      .
      3) Ozzie Guillien is a great manager – one of the most underrated in baseball. He was the architect of the 2005 White Sox championship, essentially acting as his own GM that year – Kenny Williams rubber stamped all of Guillen’s signing and trade requests, and the end result was the Sox’ first ring in 90 years. Yeah he’s an asshole but he knows how to build a ballclub.

    12. Downwind

^Nah he’s not kidding, the Rockies actually have a decent starting rotation…no set ace, but all the guys are probably good for 11+ wins. They have a great MIF, as long as Scutaro can have another .285+ season. Helton is one of the most underrated players in baseball, and in my opinion is a first ballot HOF’er. I don’t think there will be a tougher 1-6 line up in the national league…
      1) Fowler
      2)Scutaro
      3)Gonzalez
      4)Tulowitzki
      5)Cuddyer
      6)Helton/Giambi

I agree with you on Ozzie, and the giants have improved their offense. I’m just saying don’t overlook Colorado…

The Tigers will beat the Yankees in the ALCS, they may very possibly have Victor Martinez back by the end of the season. With V-Mart, Cabrera and Fielder all slugging while Verlander, Fister and Porcello are able to control the mound deep in games only to be relieved by Benoit and Valverde, the Tigers will be unstoppable come October.

This is bullshit. Do your homework next time so I don’t waste any more time reading your columns

I’m sorry, but no, Baustista should not have won the AL MVP. Verlander deserved it. Every game he starts you wonder if he’s going to pull out a no-no, or at the very least a complete game. And there’s no way the Yanks go all the way this season.

The Yankees potentially have the best pitching rotation in the majors other than Philly.
With the possibility of CC, Nova, Pettite, Pineda and Hughes they’re going to be set.

    1. Tits or GTFO

I hate the Angels but they have a better rotation than either of those teams. Yankees aren’t even close.

  5. Tits or GTFO

Decent but two enormous fails. I didn’t read all the comments but I’m sure it’s been pointed out Theo did NOT get fired. Also, 2 best teams in the AL? Pretty sure the Rangers have won the AL the past 2 years beating the Yankeea and Rays (twice) along the way. So you and the Baltimore Orioles need to get your shit together.

Hey, ‘Tits or GTFO’, get the fuck out right now. You are so fucking stupid; I hate you, pledge.

Alright kid with the gayest name on this site go ahead and try to elaborate on that, but I doubt you’re anything more than a douche bag troll with no life or you would have done so in the first place

    3. Paranormal Frativity

I will elaborate; your comment was extremely unnecessary and invalid. Yeah, the Rangers won the AL the last two years, and who is still the best team? The New York Yankees, we are talking about the best team with the best players at every position. Name one position the Rangers have a better player than the Yankees. The yankees do have a better and deeper rotation than the Angels and the Rangers.

“Name one position the Rangers have a better player”

      C: Napoli > Martin
      1B: Texiera > Moreland
      2B: Cano > Kinsler
      3B: Beltre > Rodriguez
      SS: Andrus > Jeter
      LF: Gardner > Murphy
      CF: Grandy > Hamilton
      RF: Cruz > Swisher
      DH: Young > Ibanez

      I’ve got Texas winning positional players/DH 5-4.
Yanks have better SP (only because, aside from CC and maybe Feliz, neither are anything special).
Rangers definitely have a deeper bullpen (learned that the hard way in last year’s ALCS).

As a Tigs fan, I definitely think that Texas is the class of the AL.

But when it’s all said and done, the Rangers are the best team in the MLB. No question

I wish someone doing an MLB Divisional preview knew something about the division. Or baseball as a whole. Just a thought.
