The First Church Of Cannabis Has Been Founded In Indiana Thanks To Religious Freedom Law
Indiana recently passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the state is already seeing some unintended consequences. One of those is The First Church of Cannabis. Christian rock band Creed’s “Higher” comes to mind…
After the act was passed, there was quite an uproar as it essentially gave business owners the right to refuse service based on race, gender or sexual orientation. Indiana governor Mike Pence has since said that it is a priority to make amendments to the act clarifying that it does not, in fact, allow business owners to refuse service based on those criteria. I’m guessing he hasn’t heard about the Church of Cannabis, because he may want to make it a high priority to clarify that weed is still illegal in the state. However, now the state needs a “compelling interest” to limit religious freedom. Indiana lawyer Abdul-Hakim Shabazz said that if you can show that reefer is part of your religious practices, you’re not likely to face consequences. Hopefully, for the church’s sake, the government doesn’t try to weed out those exploiting the RFRA.
So, yeah, this dude Bill Levin realized, with his newly restored religious freedom, he could get high legally (sorta). Thus began The First Church of Cannabis. It was approved by the Indiana Secretary of State. It’s real. It’s a thing. If I told you all the details without proof, I don’t think you’d believe me. Here’s a Facebook post from the Grand Poohba Levin himself:
Folks…. I have GOOD NEWS. Together we will Pray as CANNATAERIANS.WELCOME TO MY CHURCH!THE FIRST CHURCH OF CANNABIS…
Posted by Bill Levin on Friday, March 27, 2015
Going out on a limb here, but I think these rules were decided while Bill was a little baked. Cannataerians (or Cannabiterians, as noted on the church’s Facebook) should first of all “Not be an asshole.” Looks like it rules out most of our readers. Also, see #8 about trolling on the internet. Donations of $4.20 a month. Everything about this…
I have some questions though. I understand the COC is trying to lease a building that they can meet in, but will these donations also go to “religious supplies” (I’m talking about weed, you guys), or will members have to bring their own Devil’s Lettuce to church? (Ha, church and the devil. Jokes!)
You’re probably wondering, “How can I help support this church even if I don’t live in Indiana?” There’s a GoFundMe. That’s how. The funds are coming in at a blazing speed through the online joint effort as they’ve potted over $3k in 3 days. The campaign’s goal is to get a lease for a building until they can break ground on the Hemp Temple, or as I will refer to it, the Hemple.
Bill Levin, you are changing the world. This has to be a total pipe dream coming to life for you. I’ll be blunt, though: many people will debate on whether or not your intention are dubious, but at least you’re doing something you’re passionate about, not just sitting on your ass and getting high. Amen. .

11 years ago at 3:11 pmAlso, “1) Don’t be an asshole.”, is probably the best religious advice I have ever heard.

11 years ago at 3:44 pmLooks like I’m going to Indiana to become the patron saint of #ButtStuff.
11 years ago at 3:22 pmTry doing some research instead of just believing whatever some social justice warrior posts on facebook. The law doesn’t “give business owners the right to refuse service based on race, gender, or sexual orientation.” Here’s an article on specifically why Apple’s Tim Cook has this all wrong, but also does a great job of explaining the whole situation:

Fuckin boo
11 years ago at 3:29 pmYou’re an idiot if you don’t plainly understand the real purpose of the RFRA, which just *happened* to be passed in a state where gay marriage was legalized via court order six months ago, and also just *happens* to be a state that does not include gay people under its list of protected classes in its civil rights legislation – which in Indiana protects pretty much everything else (religion, race, gender, etc) from service refusal under its Public Accommodations clause. Gays are the only class of people that will be affected by this law. “But that’s totally not the intention (wink wink)”.
11 years ago at 3:41 pmDid you even read the article? The law doesn’t justify refusal of service to anyone and doesn’t even prevent lawsuits against a business owner if they do that. It just allows people to use the defense of freedom of religious expression in certain instances of commerce if they are sued. If you refused to bake a birthday cake for a gay person because they are gay, you’ll still lose that lawsuit. However, if you say you don’t want to bake a wedding cake for a gay wedding because doing so would provide material support to a celebration that runs contrary to your religious beliefs, the gay couple will simply have to find another baker.
tl;dr This law, like the federal version of it from ’93, prevents unjust punishment for strongly held religious beliefs protected by the 1st Amendment.
11 years ago at 4:55 pmThanks for trying to educate. I’m at IU right now and I’m sick and tired of people spouting off about this citing shit the media has said. There are so many idiots out there. Even our damn president sent out an email condemning it. This situation basically sums up how our country is going to operate. The media controls all, and whatever they want to publish or broadcast the people will believe. It is truly terrifying and unfortunate.
11 years ago at 4:30 pmThank you for posting this. Looked into the federal law mentioned in that article and found that it was introduced into the senate by none other than two infamous democrats, Chuck Schumer and Ted Kennedy, then signed by Bill Clinton. Also interesting to know that 31 states currently have either the exact same law, or one that has been interpreted by state supreme courts to mean the same thing. 20 more are currently attempting to pass such a law (the reason it adds up to 51 is because some that already have similar laws are attempting to pass the EXACT law). Won’t be listening to any more uninformed social crusaders attack this law without bringing that one out.
11 years ago at 7:41 pmI have no idea what the RFL was until now and I can tell you this article is just as annoying as the folks you’re complaining about.
People in Indiana can already refuse service to gays. This law can be used as a loophole to ignore future antidiscrimination laws -I guess. I think we can agree that’s fucked up.
The good is that churches can go out and feed the hungry even if there’s a law/ ordinance against it.
I dislike RFLs because I, for one, hate when people as an excuse to not immunize their kids and stupid shit like that.
11 years ago at 8:21 pmI hereby consecrate the Church of the Almighty Based Dorn, whose central sacrament is to post devotional praise to the Almighty Dorn in our sacred temple, the TFM Forums. Unfortunately our house of worship was viciously destroyed by religious bigots in the Grandex IT department last year, and our congregation has been lost and persecuted ever since. But the Indiana legislature has stepped in to protect our rights against religious discrimination. So bring back the forums before I have the Indiana State Police arrest your ass, TechGuy.
11 years ago at 3:46 pmDid you join Dorns church for the gangbang?
11 years ago at 4:27 pmYour use of “weed,” “potted” and “blunt” were pure genius.
