Moreover, it was dropped to prevent the invasion of Japan, which we sure as hell would have won, just at the cost of hundreds of thousands of dead American soldiers. The government surrendered because it killed hundreds of thousands, if there was no bomb then the Japanese would of lost more people because they wouldn’t of surrendered. The discussions clearly indicated that the surrender was a direct result of a wish to prevent further destruction by the new bombs. A secondary inducement was to stop the firebombing that had already decimated most cities. The “Russian Invasion” thesis is so laughable that no serious historian even bothers to float it out there anymore. And, yeah, we opened up the nuclear age. What of it? Let the rest of the world suck our Atomic Dick.
