The PGA Is Taking Away Your Fun At The Waste Management Open’s 16th Hole
Golf is a majestical sporting event. It’s a gentleman’s game and it should be treated with respect. Causing a ruckus during a man’s backswing is a crime that should be punishable by death. However, there are some traditions in golf that should not be messed with: the Byron being the biggest party on the tour and the party that is the sixteenth hole at the Waste Management Phoenix Open are two of those.
The sixteenth hole at this open is truly something that every golf fan should experience at least once in his life. The famous par 3 is surrounded by stadium grandstands where the fans go nuts for the players and the caddies. Players interact with the fans by throwing shirts and candy into the stands, but it appears as if this is all about to come to a screeching halt. The PGA’s fun police announced Tuesday that players and caddies are no longer allowed to throw, kick, or propel things into the stands.

First, they banished the caddie races in 2013. Coincidentally, this announcement also came on the heels of Tiger announcing he will make his 2015 debut at TPC Scottsdale. This is all the PGA’s doing, too, as tournament officials want to see the shenanigans continue.
From ESPN:
When asked whose idea it was to stop these things, the answer is what you’d expect.
“You’re going to have to direct those questions to the PGA Tour,” said a tournament official who wishes to remain nameless.
Since it doesn’t seem as if we’ll get the spectacle back for the foreseeable future, let’s pour one out for the sixteenth hole and take a look back at some of the iconic moments it gave us.

11 years ago at 1:15 pmWell we all know the TFM fun police is out in full force today.
11 years ago at 1:17 pmWhat’s the PGA going to do if someone breaks the rules? Give them a penalty stroke? If someone tosses a t-shirt into the stands, then wins the tournament, will the PGA force them to vacate the win?

11 years ago at 12:32 amThey didn’t make a rule against signing titties at the 16th hole.
11 years ago at 1:40 pmYou would think a waste management sponsor would promote throwing things places.
11 years ago at 2:00 pmSounds like they need Happy Gilmore to shake things up a bit.

11 years ago at 2:16 pmLeave it to Boulevard to not include Tiger’s ace at this hole in 1997, utterly worthless.

11 years ago at 3:38 pmDidn’t realize the PGA is also taking away a player’s ability to hit a hole-in-one at 16.
11 years ago at 9:42 amSounds kind of like when TFM took away the forums/fun.
