Missouri tried its damndest to stay in the Union, but half the state – including Governor Jackson – rebelled when Lincoln sent federal troops to reinforce the St. Louis Arsenal, killing and capturing Missouri Millitiamen in the process. Lincoln then sent federal troops to invade and capture Jeff City, setting up an unelected puppet government loyal to the Union. The elected government fled to the southwest corner of the state and declared Missouri’s allegiance to the Confederacy. The western and southwestern parts of the state were extremely loyal to the Confederacy, hence Gen. Ewing’s General Order No. 11, and my tactful response in Lawrence.
There’s a reason the Confederate Flag has 13 stars – one belongs to Missouri.
