TKE Chapter At Johnson & Wales University Partook In “Tortuous” Hazing According To Lawsuit

Lawsuit Details “Torturous” Hazing at TKE at Johnson & Wales

I’ve read, and heard, some pretty fucked up stories about hazing. Of course, there are the stupid ones, like the goobers who complained about being forced to be designated drivers at Louisville. And then there are really bad ones, like the poor bastard at Syracuse who lost four of his fingers to frostbite after being forced to work out outside in sub-zero temperatures. , Well, the details included in a lawsuit filed in Providence (RI) County Superior Court last week regarding hazing at TKE at Johnson & Wales fall into the latter category.

A former Johnson & Wales student, Terrance Bennett, is suing TKE for the hazing he allegedly endured during Fall 2014. According to Courthouse News Service, the complaint states that, “in the name of brotherhood, members of TKE had him branded, beat him with wooden paddles, burned him with cigarettes, urinated on him, forced him to eat raw onions and butter until he threw up, and then made him shower in his own vomit.” My gut reaction as a girl is “What the fuck?!” but from what I’m told by my guy friends, none of this is really out of the ordinary (except the urination and vomit shower), unless you consider whatever went on was so severe that Bennett wound up spending a month in intensive care as the result of his injuries.

According to court documents, Bennett was one of three pledges left standing when he approached his big brother, TKE’s chapter president Michael McAteer (who is now a defendant in the case) for advice because he was in so much pain that he could not sit or walk. McAteer allegedly told him not to go to the hospital “because people would ask questions,” and the fraternity would be in a lot of trouble.

Bennett complied until one night he went to sleep and woke up in intensive care at the hospital. He remained there for a month, recovering from jaundice, getting the necrotized flesh removed, and having skin grafts — among other surgeries. The doctors thought the injuries were bad enough that they called the police.

According to The Daily Beast:

Doctors treating him at the hospital immediately notified local police of Bennett’s injuries, according to the Providence Police Department, but when officers arrived to investigate what appeared to be an aggravated assault, Bennett wouldn’t cooperate. “He was reluctant to talk about how and why the incident occurred,” Providence Police spokeswoman Lindsay Lague said. “So that was it. No charges were ever filed.”

No charges were filed, but the chapter was closed in February by the national organization after they investigated the hazing allegations. Alex Baker, Chief Information Officer for Tau Kappa Epsilon International Fraternity, wrote in a statement, “After receiving allegations of hazing, we conducted an investigation into the Tau-Mu chapter of TKE. At the conclusion of the investigation, Tau Kappa Epsilon made the decision to close the chapter on February 2, 2015. The group is no longer recognized as an active chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon and is not allowed to represent themselves as a student organization on campus.”

Good riddance.

Why are two broke girls who felt hazed because they had to do crafting with dull scissors writing about whether or not male pledging is acceptable or not?

Hazing is to form the brotherhood anything that doesn’t physically or mentally damage the person is ok. You will be their brother one day you don’t want to hurt them just make them better

Definitely chief, pissing on somebody and burning them repeatedly with cigarettes and “beating” (completely different from a few swats) him with a wooden paddle on his torso and body definitely teaches the pledge something.

You are an idiot and if your are in high school the only bid you’re going to get is from a 20 person shit hole of a chapter like this.

As a alumni of this school and as GDI with a lot of friends in organizations let me tell you these kids were the scum of the earth. Defiantly more of a gang with letters than a so called fraternity. Always coked out of there minds looking for fights and trouble to create. Surprised they never got caught earlier you could always tell who was pledging them after a long night of getting beatup and abused. These kids are royally fucked if charges are pressed against them . I don’t think many of them even obtain degrees after attending the school and now criminal charges pshhhh

I made an account on this site just to comment here. I am in a frat at this school which by the way has 10,000 students and 3 other campus’s (2 of which have Greek Life) our Greek system is pretty solid and weaving out the bad eggs like TKE and a sorority with some close friends of their chapter that won’t be named…but really friends of theirs so surprise surprise. These ass clowns are nothing short of a gang. Pissed that these chodes got our schools name on the internet for once with this bullshit. The pledge couldn’t even walk, rumor has it his girlfriend needed a bodyguard as did he while in his hospital room so TKE wouldn’t attack them. Fuck these guys, have fun starring in Orange Is The New Black 2.

I feel I need to defend my chapter before you all judge. I was a member of The tau mu chapter at jwu from 2008-2012. During this time we won multiple awards from the school including charity of the year, and fraternity of the year and a few more. Our Greek life is different then most of yours we don’t have Greek row fraternity row we are all off campus houses, so with that we get away with a lot more. Was our pledging period hard as hell are those stories in the articles true? yes they are. But you are not forced to get the brand you are given the option. We didn’t have big numbers bc our process was so hard but those that made it through were truly brothers. If you wana go Greek go tKe that does not apply to us half of you wouldn’t of made it. Most of you are over privileged little fucks that would have droped the first night. Lastly the kids that did this did not pledge. At one point we were suspended and we had to cross a bunch of kids very quickly so they did not go through our process. It truly upsets me that they would do this to someone when they had no clue what they were doing. So before you open your mouths talk to some of the older brothers, I wouldn’t change anything about my pledging days and I know they wouldn’t either. Yours in the bond the joker #245
