U of H Fires Offensive Coordinator After First Game

It was a tough season opener for the Houston Cougs, in particular for offensive coordinator Mike Nesbitt, who “resigned” after they were embarrassed by Texas State University to the tune of 30-13. Texas State out of San Marcos, TX is in its first season in the FBS (Western Athletic Conference) after being called up from D-1 AA. As we all know, a coaching resignation is truly a firing. It goes like this: “So, the bad news is you’re fired. The good news is you can tell people you quit.”

Nesbitt called his first offensive game on Saturday, as this was his first year in the position. Houston racked up 13 points on 326 total yards, their lowest total since 2007. But one game to show what you can do? One game?

“We wish Mike the best in his future endeavors and thank him for his contributions to the Houston program,” Levine said in a statement. “We are confident in Travis and his play-calling ability moving forward.”

Translation: We know Mike was calling his first game ever, and we know this is a brand new offense under a brand new coaching staff. And we know the most productive passer in our program’s history, Case Keenum, is now fighting to earn a spot on an NFL roster, buuuuuuuut that was Texas State out there. I’d like to thank Mike for his contributions to the program, but he really hasn’t contributed shit. I mean he’s only been here a few months. We really aren’t very confident in Travis taking over the offensive play-calling, but he’s all we got, so we’re pretty much just fucked.

If you want my take, though, I think it’s a slap in the face to Texas State. They’re an up-and-comer. Besides, 326 total yards isn’t THAT terrible considering the gross transformation of the program. Nesbitt didn’t get a fair shake. Texas State takes on Texas Tech in San Marcos this Saturday in the biggest home game in their history. Hold onto your butts, Red Raider coaching staff.
