University Of South Carolina Crosses Sigma Chi Off Hit List In War On Fraternities
The University of South Carolina is cleaning house. On Wednesday, officials announced that the Sigma Chi fraternity was shut down due to hazing allegations. The chapter is the fifth fraternity to be suspended or closed at USC since fall 2014.
From The State:
The University of South Carolina’s Sigma Chi chapter was closed by the international fraternity’s leaders after they learned members engaged in physical and mental abuse of pledges, officials said Wednesday.
The fraternity became aware of a “serious hazing incident” involving the USC chapter on March 24, Sigma Chi’s executive director, Michael Church, said in a statement. The fraternity immediately issued an interim suspension of the USC chapter while the matter was investigated, he said.
“The activities the chapter engaged in, including physical and mental abuse of its pledges, are grossly misaligned with everything the Sigma Chi International Fraternity stands for, and we are resolved to hold those individuals accountable,” Church said. “Hazing in any form has no place in our fraternity, our communities, or our society as a whole.”
Former Sigma Chi members will be required to move out of their Greek Village house by 6 p.m. Sunday, said USC spokesman Wes Hickman.
I don’t know what landed Sigma Chi in hot water, but the things that qualify as “physical and mental abuse” these days are a joke. And with USC running train on fraternity after fraternity as of late (FIVE fraternities gone in a year and a half!), I especially suspect these allegations to be complete and utter horse shit.
Go ahead, “Stop Hazing” plebs, bring on the angry emails saying “You don’t know what they did in there! I heard they made pledges blah blah blah blah…” Unless you’re a brother of Sigma Chi, I don’t wanna hear it.
It’s a shame to see Sigma Chi go. They’re one of the few fraternities that managed to remain standing this long in the Greek village amidst the university’s war on fraternities. They had a beautiful house, a pristine reputation, and one of the most-loved philanthropies on campus, Derby Days, where all the sororities would flock to the house and participate in field day-type games and shit.
I especially sympathize with what these brothers are going through. Back in 2011, I was booted out of the village house right across the street due to hazing allegations. I was a part of a large pledge class, so we were able to found a new fraternity, and I recommend the brothers of Sigma Chi do the same. At the end of the day, the bond you share is stronger than any configuration of Greek letters, and when yours are taken down from the front of the house, don’t let that bond go down too.
With that, I say RIP Sigma Chi. Hopefully, you will soon be celebrating the birth of something even better..

As much as I would like to give every sigchi hydrophobeee I hate to see another fraternity get taken away.
9 years ago at 3:03 pmThank you?
9 years ago at 3:13 pmThey, essentially, bashed one of their spring pledges in the head with a glass beer bottle.
9 years ago at 6:22 pmLike I said, fuck sigmachees
9 years ago at 1:23 am“Mental and physical hazing” with no details, that’s so soft. Power tripping administrative officials. It’s a shame that years of history can get thrown out the window in a heartbeat. In Hoc
9 years ago at 3:17 pmSaid to say, but after attending BLTW (national summer leadership or whatever you guys do in other fraternities) you could just tell how excited our headquarters was to fall in line with the PC movement other fraternities have started.
9 years ago at 3:20 pmFuck p4b
9 years ago at 1:29 pmA brother on xanax beat a pledge with a champagne bottle and he got cut severely and went to the hospital. The only reason the details weren’t shared is to protect the reputation of their brothers.
9 years ago at 9:40 amHey game frock, how about you stop acting like you know everything that went on during this event. You were not there. You spreading rumors and renditions of what happened is only hurting the greek reputation because what you are saying is wrong. And you insinuating “they” is putting an umbrella of blame on every member when it was a isolated, independent incident.
9 years ago at 4:41 pmWhy don’t you not do retarded shit that could put someone in the hospital
9 years ago at 10:14 am“Shut down due to allegations” that’s fair…
9 years ago at 4:23 pmInnocent until proven guilty unless it’s not convenient, then all logic goes out the window.
9 years ago at 9:20 amWhen a pledge is discovered by the house dad that the school hires, in an on-campus fraternity house, in a pool of his own blood, with two barred out brothers standing over him, there isn’t much of an argument. Xanax is a really bad thing and Sigma Chi’s were mostly good people. Unfortunate that prescription drugs make people on our campus act like that.
9 years ago at 11:48 pmCompletely false “account”
9 years ago at 4:42 pmWhat the hell happened to ” Innocent until proven guilty “? This is horshit. I’m sick of how culture is de-facto nullifying our Constitution and turning away from the values contained within, among these ” Life LIBERTY, & the pursuit of happiness. ” LIBERTY means you don’t get fucked with due to arbitrary claims unless they are PROVEN BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT. Fuck it vote libertarian.

9 years ago at 5:10 pmCompletely agree. Any case involving a fraternity that’s under any type of accusation has pretty much been turned into a kangaroo court now a days, and are now striping them of their rights to due process. It’s a complete travesty to the entire judicial system.

9 years ago at 8:54 amThey were very guilty. The school did them a solid and didn’t detail the incident because it makes all entities involved look shitty.
9 years ago at 11:43 pmI think a pledge caught a bong to the face and was rushed to the hospital. Needless to say, I think their high times are over
9 years ago at 5:44 pmChampagne bottle
9 years ago at 5:56 pmAlso kept a diary of everything they were doing to their pledges over hell week.
9 years ago at 6:25 pmWith this many fraternities being booted, could you imagine if they all went rogue? Going rogue would mean no inclusion in a lot of Greek life events, but this many fraternities at one school could work. IFC would shit themselves.
9 years ago at 5:54 pmYou have wrote how many of these RIP articles and still haven’t learned the lesson? You can write 100 more claiming it’s all nonsense and we will all agree, but it doesn’t matter anymore if the hazing violations seem like minor BS because this is the reality frats now reside. Thank god I was out just before this shit started, but it’s time for all organizations to chalk this up as an L and live to fight another day. At this point if your chapter is suspended/kicked-off campus for hazing violations then your chapter lacks strong leadership. Time to apply the lessons of Guerilla warfare in the face of a stronger opponent until this PC fad blows over.
9 years ago at 6:07 pmThe administration is signing their own financial death certificates. I chose my school based on 3 categories: Academic Rank, Power of the Greek System, and ratio of boobs to dudes. Losing 5 houses will only reduce matriculation year over year as wealthy out of state future Bros head to schools that haven’t murdered Greek life. You’d think an Econ Prof would explain this whole margin of diminishing returns to the President…
9 years ago at 6:55 pmWow, being lapped for supporting the College Greek system via stuff I learned in college…I guess I’ll go take my crayons and color.
