University of Texas Students Combat Sexual Assault With ‘Not On My Campus’ Campaign
You’ve probably noticed that recent media portrayal of the Greek community has been, shall we say, negative. Whether it’s racism, hazing or sexual assault, Greeks seemingly aren’t doing themselves any favors. Fortunately, thanks to a group of students at the University of Texas, light is being shown on some of the good that’s being done by Greek members.
“Not On My Campus” is a student led initiative aiming to end the silence surrounding sexual assault and create a safe environment for all students at Texas. NOMC isn’t a strictly “Greek” campaign, but many of its leaders are in Greek organizations, which is badass. The founders include a Pi Kappa Phi, a Phi Delta Theta and an Alpha Chi Omega.
To get involved, sign this petition and post a photo to social media with the words “NOT ON MY CAMPUS” written on your hand. Like this:
Simple, yet effective, as the petition has over 1,000 signatures in just three days.
NOMC at UT has been picking up steam with national media coverage in addition to social media posts showing support coming from University president Bill Powers and Olympic athlete Trey Hardee among other high profile members of the UT community. UT isn’t the only school to have done a NOMC campaign either. Last year, Southern Methodist University ran one and Texas Christian University is in the middle of a campaign right now as well.
The issue of sexual assault isn’t just a Greek problem; it’s everywhere on college campuses, but it often gets bundled in with many other negative stereotypes that fraternity members are labeled with. It’s awesome to see members of our community taking a stand to begin a conversation that will undoubtedly bring change to how people deal with and discuss sexual assault.
