UVA Associate Dean Of Students Sues Rolling Stone For Defamation Over False Rape Story

Just when Rolling Stone probably thought that maybe everything was becoming water under the bridge in regards to their Phi Psi rape fiction that captivated the nation, things get even worse for the magazine. The Associate Dean of Students at UVA, Nicole Eramo, is dropping the hammer on Rolling Stone for how she was depicted in the story.

From the Washington Post:

Nicole Eramo is seeking more than $7.5 million in damages from Rolling Stone, its parent company Wenner Media and Sabrina Rubin Erdely, the investigative journalist who wrote the explosive account of sexual assault on the campus in Charlottesville, Va. The magazine retracted the story after news organizations and the Columbia University journalism school found serious flaws in it.

Eramo, who is the university’s chief administrator dealing with sexual assaults, argues in the lawsuit that the story destroyed her credibility, permanently damaged her reputation and caused her emotional distress.

Phi Psi is also planning on filing a lawsuit against Rolling Stone, but has not done so yet.

It’s also amazing that the people responsible for letting the story hit the newsstands still have jobs. It’s clear that they don’t have any problem dragging some names through the mud to push an agenda and sell more magazines. For example, look at this excerpt from the lawsuit:

“They were the result of a wanton journalist who was more concerned with writing an article that fulfilled her preconceived narrative about the victimization of women on American college campuses, and a malicious publisher who was more concerned about selling magazines to boost the economic bottom line for its faltering magazine, than they were about discovering the truth or actual facts.”

Even the lady who has the responsibility of protecting and aiding sexual assault victims knows that the story was nothing more than an avenue to push an agenda and to boost the bottom line.

Drop the mic, Nicole.

Hopefully this is a small step towards gaining some honestly and integrity in today’s main stream media.

You’re delusional if you think the liberals are only to blame. Fox News gets called out on an almost daily basis for embellishing and fabricating shit to scare their elderly republican base.

There are shitty media outlets, liberal and conservative, that post news with questionable evidence to back it up. Don’t criticize one shitty site, just because you disagree with their message, and accept another shitty site that fits your own agenda. Spreading false news threatens democracy because it persuades public opinion. We are all guilty of visiting sites that post garbage. I mean, cmon, we’re on TFM.

Of course, but sites like TFM don’t take themselves seriously. They know they’re garbage and their readership does too.

But Fox bills itself as a genuine “fair and balanced” news source yet it features some of the most polarizing, biased, and just downright factually wrong bullshit you can find anywhere on TV. I’m not saying they’re any better or worse than their batshit liberal equivalents, I’m simply pointing out that you can’t just blame the inflammatory nature of Rolling Stone and the like on “the liberal media.” A catchphrase, which fittingly, is used a lot by Fox News.

JohnFrat, two things. 1) Your name is awful, so fuck you. 2) You’re talking as if Fox News is a primarily Conservative news corporation. In truth however, it’s primarily independent. More moderates watch Fox News than ANY other news outlet, and more moderates watch Fox than conservatives. So fuck off and stop talking out of your ass, squirt.

Uhm the real one? Maybe you should look it up instead of believing what people tell you, Teddy. I would think a former president would have a habit of forming his own opinions, but hey I’m a pet detective so I’ll hold my peace. However, if you went and did some research you would see for yourself that most independent watch Fox. Fox reports the truth a good amount of the time and because the truth often disagrees with the left wing socialist agenda, liberals hate Fox News. Don’t be a puppet teddy. You’re better than that, champ.

“Maybe you should look it up instead of believing what people tell you.” Well sonny, I did look it up. Have for several years. And ya know who told me Fox News was conservative, not independent? Fox did. Their talk show hosts. Their editors. Their reporters and newscasters. They all pretty clearly told me they were conservatively biased, whereas shows like MSNBC and The Daily Show are liberally biased, again shown in the actions and words of the people hosting and running the shows. So I do believe what people told me about Fox News being conservative. Because those people were Fox News. Good day to you, sir, and try not to get stuck in the rhino’s asshole on the way out.

        Ace Vantura, two things.
        1) My name is a reference to one of the founders of my Fraternity. I wouldn’t expect someone who rips off the exact name of a great movie character and does nothing funny with it to understand that kind of thing.
        2) Fox News has high viewership because of it’s elderly republican base who watch it religiously, and then everyone else who watches it for comedic value. The Kardashians get great ratings too, and a significant portion comes from hate watching. The fact that tons of people watch Fox has nothing to do with the factual merits of their reporting. It has only to do with how entertaining and inflammatory they are.

I don’t understand her exact position and maybe it’s because I’m a guy. But how does a false story about someone else hurt her credibility? Is she refering to her position credibility? Also, how does one define the difference between “credibility” and “reputation”? Inherently, isn’t it the same thing?

The way the article depicted the university, and her as a liaison for the university, as incompetent buffoons is what she’s alleging damaged her credibility. The article basically trashed her name as a student advocate and made it seem as though she did nothing for this “victim”

She was absolutely hammered by that Rolling Stone article. I think, among a TON of other things, she was given a false quote, supposedly telling the accuser, Jackie, something along the lines of, “Oh we don’t report our sexual assault numbers because no one wants to go to the ‘rape’ school.”

Literally, that quote, made up and put in the mouth of a woman whose job is to help sexual assault victims. That’s sort of a huge problem.

I had forgot that she had been named in the article. I did not take the time to review before I posted my comment. Laps taken.

I am glad to see this news. This should happen to more news outlets and journalists who pursue an agenda and fallacious stories about fraternities and members of fraternities. These journalist who have a preconceived idea that fraternity men are out of control preying on women need to be stopped. I am usually not in favor of lawsuits, but this one is damn well merited.

Emily Renda is a feminist activist who serves as the subcommittee chair of the Virginia Governor’s Task Force on Combating Sexual Violence, giving her significant influence over government policy. Renda introduced Sabrina Rubin Erdely to Jackie Coakley so she could use the resulting hoax as a Reichstag fire incident to push for more extreme anti-male legislation. GotNews’ Charles Johnson recently revealed that Renda has a history of making up stories about being raped herself.

I couldn’t hit the Nice Move link enough times to this news. As a Greek alumnus of UVA, I say strong work to Dean Eramo. Hope Phi Psi goes after them also. RS tarnished her credibility and also of the Greek system and UVA. There’s no better example of a #TFM than not taking some BS for something you didn’t do.
