UVA Theta Chi Otto Warmbier Has Just Been Released By North Korea

News is still swarming in, but what we do know right now is that North Korea has just released UVA Theta Chi Otto Warmbier. Get caught up on Otto’s story here.

From CNN:

Otto Warmbier, an American college student jailed in North Korea, has been released, according to his parents.

“He is being medivacked to the US. The brutalization and terrorism the North Koreans have put upon Otto and the Warmbier family have ended. Thank God,” they told CNN.

Warmbier was detained in January 2016 at the airport in Pyongyang on his way home from a visit to the reclusive country.

It’s being widely reported that Otto is currently in a coma, the likes of which he has allegedly been in for around one year (widely known as being a long-ass and scary amount of time for one to remain in a coma). It’s not yet been confirmed whether the coma 1) exists, 2) was medically-induced by the North Koreans, or 3) was entered into by Otto in the apple orchards wherein he was reportedly serving out his sentence of 15 years hard labor.

What also is yet to be confirmed is former NBA star, random diplomat, and noted “Fun Dip as shampoo” advocate Dennis Rodman’s role in bringing Otto back to America in one piece.

The news of Warmbier’s release comes the same day as basketball star Dennis Rodman arrived in Pyongyang for an expected four-night visit.

When asked if he would bring up the cases of Warmbier and three other Americans detained in North Korea, Rodman told reporters, “That’s not my purpose right now … My purpose is to go over there and try to see if I can keep bringing sports to North Korea.”

We will be vigilantly updating this story as more confirmed information becomes publicly known.

Clearly the sarcasm was lost. Neither of them did anything. But here’s hoping for a quick recovery

Obviously hoping it’s not the case, but I have to wonder if they’re only freeing him since he’s in terrible shape and they don’t want a dead prisoner on their hands. Granted, Kim Jong-Un feeds people to his dogs, so they probably don’t care about having a dead prisoner. Hopefully he can make a full recovery.

That, and keeping a comatose person alive is probably eating up a lot of the very few resources that they have in that hellhole.

Legit question. Do you think it has anything to do with the new administration at all? Perhaps they didn’t think Obama would have done anything if this guy died while he was in office, but now they’re afraid of what the Trump administration might do?

Possibly, but I think it’s difficult to conclude that anything Kim Jong-Un and North Korea does has any reason behind it.

The more I’m reading the general opinion seems to be they released him at the same time as the Rodman visit to distract from his condition.

Probably more because they don’t want a dead American on their hands, than just a dead prisoner. Fuck North Korea and everything they stand for.

Fuck Rodman, what a fucking dumb douche. Dont let him come back. Its not your objective to smooth relations over so imprisoned american citizens can come back to their familes? You care more about bringing basketball to NK? Fuck you dude

So can we fuck up North Korea now? I’m fucking sick of them acting like they can do whatever they want.

I’d like to see what a couple MOABs can do to Pyongyang. Ideally while Rodman is visiting.
