Weed Is Now Legal In D.C., But Uptight Assholes In Congress Want To Break Up The Party
As of today, residents and visitors of the District of Columbia are now legally permitted to get as stoned as a statue found on the National Mall. However, backlash from Congress has threatened to reverse legalization and put the city’s mayor in jail.
Initiative 71, which was proposed by Mayor Muriel Bowser and calls for the legalization and possession of up to two ounces of marijuana in the nation’s capital, was approved by a landslide 70 percent of D.C. voters back in November. The bill allows anyone old enough to drink a beer to smoke marijuana (in private), carry it, grow it, and share it — but not sell it.
The reason weed can’t be sold in the city — and the reason we can’t walk into a Pots “R” Us, buy a sack, and get blazed before heading to one of D.C.’s many museums to look at crazy paintings and sculptures and shit — is because opponents in Congress responded to the passing of Initiative 71 by tacking a small provision in a massive federal spending bill in December, according to the Cannabis Business Times.
“The provision, or ‘rider,’ blocks the District from using taxpayer dollars to enact marijuana reforms.”
Those sneaky, weed-hating bastards. The provision also puts Mayor Bowser’s ass on the line, who is now in violation of the Anti-Deficiency Act, which prohibits the D.C. government from spending money Congress has not appropriated.
A leading opponent of Bowser is Representative Jason Chaffetz, who the other kids in the neighborhood never invited to play with them.
From the Washington Post:
In an interview with The Washington Post, Chaffetz went further. He said that if Bowser and city officials are “under any illusion that this would be legal, they are wrong. And there are very severe consequences for violating this provision. You can go to prison for this. We’re not playing a little game here.”
It’s a little fucked up that Mayor Bowser and her dream of legally roasting a bone within sight of the Washington Monument are now in jeopardy because of a provision passed a month after her bill. Props to her for not backing down and going through with the plan anyway.
No one knows how the whole thing will play out for Bowser or for the city, but the Washington Post has already speculated that D.C. will become the “Wild West of marijuana,” where growers will push the questionable legal limits of what they can sell. (Seeds, anyone?)
Luckily, Bowser and her bill have plenty of firepower on their side of the fight, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton perhaps being the most vocal supporter.
From New York Magazine:
“‘If the Republican Congress … wants to pick a fight with the District over our local marijuana reform law,’ Norton said, ‘a fight is what they will get.’”
Stick it to the man, Delegate Norton..

Fuckin’ hippies…
11 years ago at 10:06 amCould you imagine lighting up and then going into the National Air and Space Museum just to find out everything inside’s a Decepticon
11 years ago at 10:08 amYoure an idiot.
11 years ago at 10:09 amMichael Bay already did that
11 years ago at 10:21 amIn 10 years it’ll be legalized everywhere and this will all be trivial. The business potential in the marijuana industry is too high to ignore.
11 years ago at 10:08 am70% of voters in the city want this law passed. The men and women on Capitol Hill seem to forget this is a democracy.
11 years ago at 10:21 amNo we’re not, we’re a constitutional republic.
11 years ago at 10:22 am“Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.” Benjamin Franklin.
11 years ago at 11:50 amThe demographics of DC shouldn’t surprise you as to why 70% voted this way
11 years ago at 10:33 amBoosh, you’re an imbecile for writing this article. You clearly don’t understand that this is a violation of the United States constitution. The District of Columbia is not supposed have representation like the 50 states. Our founding fathers made it that way. This is just another example of liberals giving themselves powers that don’t belong to them, and usurping the constitution.
11 years ago at 10:22 amGo smoke a joint or something and chill your antiquated tits.
11 years ago at 10:51 amShut up fucking pothead he’s absolutely correct. Fucking hippie liberal twat.
11 years ago at 11:19 amI just like fucking with you guys. You see my name and it gets your temper shorter than your dick would during the winter in my state.
11 years ago at 6:47 pmthe fact that weed is illegal is unconstitutional as is!
11 years ago at 2:00 pmLegalization of weed is neither constitutional or unconstitutional pal, but legalization (therefore representation) in DC is in violation of the constitution. See how that works?
11 years ago at 1:05 pmDC and its government just suck. Perhaps it is unfortunate that Congress is using it’s constitutionally prescribed power to block marijuana legalization, but what is even worse is that this dump of a city, which receives almost the entirety of its funding from the federal government, i.e. you and me, thinks it can just defy congress and the constitution without consequence. This battle isn’t so much about marijuana legalization, but whether liberal elites can simply defy the constitution because they think they’re “right”. I wish you would have put some effort into actually discussing the context of this issue, rather than simply framing it in a context digestible for the high school try hards which abuse this site.
11 years ago at 10:22 amMaking up your own facts. TFM?
http://greatergreaterwashington.org/post/11051/how-much-federal-money-does-dc-actually-get/
11 years ago at 1:34 amNot really. Your own source concedes that eight other states are at least as dependent as DC on the federal government for state funding, which means 42 other states are doing a far better job of depending on their own citizens to support their state governments. Moreover, your source ignores the fact that DC’s workforce is almost exclusively federal employees or people who’s employment is tied directly to the federal government, e.g. lobbyists or lawyers. At the end of the day, what local revenue DC does collect comes either from local taxes on federal salaries (which are paid from abroad) or local taxes on people who’s jobs are inseparable from a large and intrusive federal government, which only makes the case stronger for congressional rather than local oversight for the District of Columbia. After all, what incentive does DC have for good local government, when it’s very well being is tied to its ability to steal from other states?
11 years ago at 7:02 amIf 70% of a city/state want a law enacted thats the god damn way it should be, this is America not Russia, its not being a hippie you close minded fucks, a couple old men shouldnt tell us oh well I know that all of you want something…but..no..Thats bullshit, we run this country. Lets keep it that way.
11 years ago at 11:31 amPlaying devils advocate here because I do love pot, but just because the majority of the population wants something might not mean it’s the best thing for the people. Maybe 70% of people would like it if the police would quit giving traffic citations but then the roads would just degenerate into chaos and we would be worse off as a whole.
11 years ago at 5:34 pmThat’s not necessarily true. There was a city that took away all traffic signs except for a few stop signs or traffic lights. (No speed limits or things of that nature) Their traffic accidents dropped to a minuscule number because people were focused on driving not checking their speed or what not.
11 years ago at 8:51 amwe should shoot it out in washington and let all those scum bags burn in hell and then take over this government as this generation see fit
11 years ago at 11:59 amMost of the writers on this site produce absolutely stupid and cheesy articles that nobody really cares about, but this guy got it right. I’m very much conservative about a lot of things but I’m also liberal on a lot of things as well. Something like marijuana makes absolutely no sense to be against. If some of you actually thought rationally like college should teach you to do (opening your mind) then you would agree. Im not saying that I enjoy weed more than booze because I dont, but it’s a hell of a lot safer. This looks like an absolute abuse of power by congress and this is the reason that our beloved country has a terrible government. We are some of the least happy people in this country and most of it is due to shitty attitudes that poison this nation.
