Week 5 College Football Picks: Welcome To Conference Season

Screen Shot 2014-09-26 at 9.15.26 AM

The TSG currently sit at an abysmal 27-23 on the season, and we aren’t happy about it. Two rocky weeks aren’t good for the soul. But alas, conference football is starting to kick off. Conference football is basically the start of a new season if your team hasn’t fucked up too royally already. Let’s get into our lock and picks for the week.

TSG Lock Of The Week

North Carolina @ Clemson

Spread: Clemson -14
TSG Pick: Clemson -14
Summary: North Carolina gave up 70 (!!) points against East Carolina last week. ECU is a damn good football squad, but putting up Baylor numbers against UNC is more telling of just how bad the UNC defense is, rather than how good ECU is. Clemson looked sharp against a Heisman-less FSU in Tallahassee this past weekend and should roll that momentum into this conference home game on Saturday.

Saturday

Northwestern @ PSU

Spread: PSU -11
TSG Pick: PSU -11
Summary: Penn State is starting off hot and Northwestern has been its usual, disappointing self. Expect Penn State to put up big numbers in this game as it continues to build a solid résumé for its bowl eligibility season.

Tennessee @ UGA

Spread: Georgia -17
TSG Pick: Tenn +17
Summary: The Vols won’t win this one in Athens, but they also won’t get blown out too badly. They kept up with Oklahoma for more than a half of football before the young team began to feel the effects of the home crowd. The rivalry between these two teams should spur a more competitive game than the OU-Tennessee game two weeks ago, and Georgia will have to rely on more than just the run game if it expects to cover this 17-point spread.

Arkansas @ Texas A&M

Spread: A&M -10
TSG Pick: Arkansas +10
Summary: Besides that opening day massacre, Texas A&M hasn’t really been tested all season. Arkansas has proven it can score points in a flurry, and this team looks like the first candidate on Texas A&M’s schedule to contest its 4-0 ATS start this season. This will be one of the games to watch this Saturday.

Missouri @ South Carolina

Spread: S. Car -7
TSG Pick: S. Car -7
Summary: We still aren’t quite sure what happened last week in Columbia. Our best guess is that the MonSTARS were battling the Toon Squad in a football game and decided to borrow the talents of the Missouri football squad. It was terrible: dropped passes, horrible tackling, poor effort, questionable play calling, no pride. We could go on for the remainder of the article, but you get the point. Missouri should give the Cocks a game this week, and I hate to pick against my prior prediction of a Missouri upset in Columbia, S.C., but the smart money says take the home team. We won’t be taking this game, because there is still a solid chance Mizzou will cover/upset and we aren’t selling out our squad. MIZ.

Duke @ Miami

Spread: Miami -5
TSG Pick: Duke +5
Summary: Duke has been covering this spread all year and seems to be a solid ACC contender. Miami looked unorganized and unimpressive against Nebraska last week. The Hurricanes consistently prove to us that their “this is our year” mentality will have to roll over to next year–again.

Baylor @ Iowa State

Spread: Baylor -23
TSG Pick: Baylor -23
Summary: Baylor wins this one by 35 points. This will be a typical run-of-the-mill Baylor beat-down against an inferior Cyclone team. We’ll be surprised if Baylor gives up more than 14 points on the road, and we are confident the Bears will score at least 42.

Illinois @ Nebraska

Spread: Nebraska -19
TSG Pick: Nebraska -19
Summary: Illinois has been squeaking out victories against teams such as Youngstown State, Western Kentucky, and Texas State. Nebraska looked great against Miami at home this past week, and the team has no reason to take its foot off the gas for its first conference game.

Cincinnati @ Ohio State

Spread: OSU -15
TSG Pick: Cincinnati +15
Summary: Gunner Kiel is living up to all of the recruiting hype from years past. This kid will keep Cincinnati in this high-scoring affair and should cover this game by a touchdown. The home team will pull out here with the victory, but we are taking Cincinnati and the points.

Nine solid picks to start off the conference season. Like always, leave your comments below and we will be sure to retweet some of the most idiotic, come gameday. Follow us on Twitter (@tokensportsguys) as we drunkenly live-tweet a great week of college football. Happy betting.

Iowa State will be a test for Baylor. Ames is always a tough place to play in Big 12.

Absolutely. No one is safe in Ames… I’m kind of hoping for an upset.

Not to mention that in the last couple years Baylor hasn’t been nearly as good on the road as they are at home.

What’s your call on the ultra competitive Purdue verse Iowa football game?

I see it being close so Purdue with the 8.5. Iowa probably takes the game by a TD, but at home in Purdue I see them keeping it close.

Token, you went 4/10 last week. I would rather ask Rush to Rehab about games to pick
