Why One UNM Sigma Chi Spent Spring Break Living On The Streets

How One UNM Sigma Chi Spent Spring Break Doing Good Rather Than Partying

What did you do on spring break? Were you one of the beach-goers who spent the week blacked out from the Friday you got out of school until waking up the Monday morning that classes resumed? If you were, you were one of the millions who soaked up the sun, let loose, and took body shots off of willing coeds. There is nothing wrong with your choice in spring break destination.

However, one Sigma Chi from the University of New Mexico, Michael Pierce, decided to forgo the fun in the sun to help raise awareness for the homeless problem in America. He documented the whole thing during the week to show what it is like to lose everything and have to live on the streets. He started the week off with $20 in pocket and would then figure out how to get money and survive from there.

Good for Michael to sacrifice a week that most kids would never consider sacrificing. In a day when fraternities are lambasted for being misogynistic and racist rapists who do nothing but harm the community, it is refreshing to see stories like this come about.

Of course not, because it’s far easier for liberal media to portray all fraternities as an organized group of misogynistic alcoholics.

Let us not forget how the Creed starts … A man of good character ….

If by Creed, you mean Standard, then yes. Might want to become a student of fair ability.

If he was trying to emulate the homeless during that week I’m sure he still had his fair share of alcohol induced blackouts

I love feel good stories as much as the next brother, but I fail to see how this helped any homeless people. The fact that he documented the ordeal makes me wonder if it was for attention.
Remember Dorn told us about how Ryan Young went on Spring break with only $9 and a bunch of IOUs?
Maybe this brother is the “Ryan Young” who got left behind.

I don’t mean to downplay what this brother set out to do. I just dislike these ‘alternate’ Spring breaks. If you want to do philanthropy while school is out, do it. But the term makes those whose choose it sound like Maryrs and those went to have fun like selfish people.

Or it just makes it sound like people are doing something different for their spring break.

Maybe it would help if you understood how philanthropies work. He makes this video, posts it on the internet, it’s then recirculated by websites like TFM which expose it to thousands of viewers. It raises public awareness of the homeless issue, has a subconscious effect on how you think about it, and makes you more likely to donate to a cause.

Also it probably doesn’t hurt that he did this in the name of an organization which has over 250,000 living members, many of whom are quite well off.

This hits home for me. I grew up in and around Albuquerque, and my family was, for a time, homeless. We were lucky enough to stay in a shelter most of the time instead of being on the streets. Some of the best people I’ve ever met were homeless, and I still talk to them from time to time.

From what I’ve seen, the homeless issue in Albuquerque has improved since the 90s, thanks in no small part to people like Mike.

I’m live in Albuquerque and this is a widespread issue. New Mexico is one of the poorest states in the union. It’s always refreshing to see people shedding light on real issues. Good on Michael

I don’t see what he did as seeking out attention for himself, to make himself sleep better at night, or even to directly help the homeless. However with that being said, it still is important that people like this fine gentlemen are going out of their way to draw notice to social situations that are happening behind our backs. Sure it would be more effective to donate to homeless shelters like the one he used, but his actions have shed light onto this community of fraternal adults. I think his spring break is more than justified and maybe next time I’ll drop a couple bucks in the cup of the homeless veteran on the highway offramp.

Truly exemplifying a man of different temperaments, talents and convictions. Godspeed Michael.

Nah, the Jordan Standard is a guide for giving out bids but it was worth a shot.
