You’re About To Hear A Lot More Wagon Wheel

The first few notes are enough to make everyone in the room, at a party or otherwise, stop what they’re doing and drink more. It’s the de facto anthem of Greeks (beside the National Anthem, of course). From back deck to last call, every playing is a special occasion.
Thanks to Darius Rucker, you’re going to hear “Wagon Wheel” a lot more…but that might not be a good thing.
Rucker has transitioned nicely from his days in Hootie and the Blowfish to a middle-tier country singer (and keg tapper). His guest appearance on Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel” performance at the Grand ‘Ole Opry was the best rendition since the live music video and is more than worthy of a TFM. Now he’s taken the next step, recording a solo version for his new album.
This version is definitely better than most others. It’s a catchier, more pop/mainstream country rendition that features background vocals from Lady Antebellum. That’s why, if you haven’t noticed already, its exploding. In less than two weeks it’s already broken into the top 75 on iTunes downloads and the top 25 of the Billboard Country charts. It’s already eclipsed the aforementioned Hootie/OCMS version in Youtube views as well.
That means a watered down version of “Wagon Wheel” is about to be lumped together with The Band Perry, Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts. It’s like when Colt Ford’s and Brantley Gilbert’s original of “Dirt Road Anthem” blew up because of Jason Aldean. On one hand this means more “Wagon Wheel,” which is rarely a bad thing. On the other, it means that special song you once madeout to, threw up to, and fought to– all in the span of three minutes and 52 seconds– is about to be downloaded by your mother.

If it’s not mainstream where you’re at, then the problem lies with your choice of residential location. Down south most already listen to it (unless they’re some sort of commie hipster douche – or black).
