10 Reasons To Get Excited For The 2013 College Football Season

The final college football season of the BCS era is upon us, beginning this Thursday night with a slew of shitty-to-halfway-decent games, including the battle of the Carolinas. That game, the first of the evening, begins at 6pm eastern in Columbia, SC. The final game on the books begins at 11pm eastern in Hawaii. Southern Cal takes on the Rainbow Warriors to close out the first night of the season.

Let’s be honest here, though. The first game could feature the Pakistani Camel Shoes versus the DeVry Desk Jockeys, and we’ll all tune in to watch, and probably bet on it, too. It’s going to be awesome, but just in case you’re not close to full torque quite yet, read these reasons to get excited:

1. Tailgating is back.

There are few better feelings in a man’s life than waking up on Saturday morning with a full slate of college football games and a long day of tailgating awaiting you. If you live on or near a college campus and you start tailgating for your Saturday home game any later than Friday evening, you’re not ready for this stage. Start following soccer.

2. Sundresses.

3. Your team is still undefeated.

Hope springs eternal, and until your team is defeated on the field, they’re in the running for a natty. Feels good. But how long will the feeling last?

4. Jadeveon Clowney may actually take someone’s head off this season.

5. Road trips.

Seedy, small town motel rooms, suitcases filled with hard liquor and your team’s colors, a smooth playlist, and 250 miles of open road between your town and theirs — road trips are where memories are made and often end up being half the fun of the entire weekend.

6. Upsets.

As long as your team is not the loser in a “Huge Upset” headline on Sunday morning, witnessing an underdog knock off a superior opponent is fantastic to witness.

7. Boots on girls.

Maybe it’s the Texan in me, but I won’t ever get tired of seeing girls in cowboy boots and skirts/dresses.

8. The Manziel story.

I know some people are sick of reading and hearing about Johnny Manziel, on and off the field, but the guy is pure entertainment. No matter where he is, all eyes are on him, and that’s because he does stuff like this on the football field:

9. College football stadiums.

100,000 screaming college football fans inside these mammoth football palaces — not a better atmosphere exists in sports.

10. The death of the BCS.

As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, this is the final season of the BCS era. Starting in 2014, computers will no longer decide which teams are worthy of postseason opportunities. It will be settled on the field, in the playoffs, like real sports are supposed to handle things.

Note: Military flyovers would have been a shoo-in for the list, but they were recently banned. A sad day.
