$10,000 In Alcohol Stolen From U.S. Open Tent
Apparently, large scale alcohol theft is a big problem in the United States. This is the second time in a just over a week that a crime of this nature has been reported. The last incident involved a seemingly preplanned heist involving 10,000 bottles of whiskey, in which the perpetrators stole the trailer transporting the liquor. The story you’re about to read is about a similar crime, but probably involved much better booze.
After the U.S. Open, unknown culprits stole roughly $10,000 worth of alcohol from a tent at Merion Golf Club. The tent, called the Trophy Club, was apparently pretty high class.
The Trophy Club is “an exclusive on-site, air-conditioned pavilion with live U.S. Open coverage located at Haverford College, approximately 400 yards from the clubhouse parking area and the 18th hole at Merion Golf Club,” the U.S. Open’s spectator guide says.
Fellow contributing writer Ashley Schaeffer BMW was actually at the tournament and at one point was inside the Trophy Club. According to him, there were “cases upon cases” of premium alcoholic beverages available in the tent during the actual tournament.
If whoever set up the Trophy Club is reading this, I have a few questions for you. Let me just get this straight. You left thousands of dollars of alcohol unsecured overnight within a quarter mile of a college campus and didn’t expect it to get stolen?
Think about it. College students generally are low on funds and drink a lot of alcohol. As a result, they’re forced to drink sub-par beer and liquor. You left what was probably some top shelf stuff sitting out and thought it would be there in the morning? Come on. Would you rather pay for shitty drinks or get good ones for free?
I’m not advocating stealing or anything like that, but if you leave that much booze unattended overnight, you kind of have it coming.

So what you’re saying is that it was too appealing, so it was kind of asking for it.

13 years ago at 8:49 amHaverford College is probably the least fun co-ed college in Pennsylvania. So….I doubt it was them. Probably Villanova or St. Joe’s guys.
13 years ago at 4:25 pmI was thinking Temple due to their student body’s large Canadian demographic.

13 years ago at 10:13 pmAt every PGA event I’ve been to, it’s best to stay late. Enjoy the landscape and scenery, and the vendors can’t re-sell the beer, so they’ll sell it for whatever. At last year’s PGA championship I got free beer for hours while cruising tents and just enjoying the sunset in a nice place. Nothin to complain about there.
