How About This Texas High School Football Coach Appearing To Slip The Referee Some Cash Post-Game
Even though I’ve never been to a Texas high school football game despite living in Austin for over a year now and having the alma mater of Drew Brees and Nick Foles a stone’s throw away from the office, I still feel like I completely understand how Texas high school football operates.
I mean, let’s not sell my credibility short — I have gone through all five seasons of Friday Night Lights with the Dillon Panthers and the East Dillon Lions multiple times. I get it. So when I saw this video of coach Richard Whitaker of Calhoun High School appearing to give the referee a hundred dollar handshake after a 43-20 win over Terry, I thought it was pretty par for the course for every team in the state with a coach not named Eric Taylor.

That’s just how big time high school programs roll. Did they even need some of the calls? Probably not. But what’s a few extra bones thrown towards the referees as insurance? Hiding in plain sight, in the middle of the field. Love it. Not like it’s his money anyway. Probably some Buddy Garrity type figure who owns a few local car dealerships funding the whole transaction. Can’t put a price on STATE! .

11 years ago at 1:42 pmWhat the hell does Texas high school football have to do with fraternity news?
11 years ago at 1:46 pmYou clearly just don’t understand. Texas is the greatest thing known to mankind!
11 years ago at 1:50 pmWell considering in Texas football is God and that this website is based out of Texas so…

11 years ago at 2:00 pmWhen I was in high school the home team was responsible for booking and paying the refs, if I remember correctly. Depending on if they were playing at home or not, he could have just been paying him for being there.
11 years ago at 1:50 pmYeah but that would be taken care of by the school district. They absolutely would not have the coach slip the ref cash after the game
11 years ago at 1:56 pmNo he was bribing him don’t take the fun out of it
11 years ago at 1:58 pmYes that is true. Usually it is more a
11 years ago at 1:59 pmOfficial than that though. I was in charge of making sure the refs signed the forms for paychecks. I don’t think they are paid in cash.
So you were like an equipment manager?

11 years ago at 3:26 pmThat’s where the office is. The TFM writer house is essentially in Buda.
11 years ago at 3:34 pmWhere is it non-essentially?
11 years ago at 6:34 pmWhen you really need to win the IM Football Championship.
11 years ago at 5:10 pmOr you win it every year and TKE only participates in “B” League so they can beat up on all the second tier teams.
11 years ago at 10:59 amI like to think of it as a note detailing where the ref can dig up his wife
11 years ago at 8:24 pmmy mother was an athletic director growing up. she always paid the refs after each home game. never seen a coach do it, but he is probably just paying him, not bribing him
