How About This Texas High School Football Coach Appearing To Slip The Referee Some Cash Post-Game
Even though I’ve never been to a Texas high school football game despite living in Austin for over a year now and having the alma mater of Drew Brees and Nick Foles a stone’s throw away from the office, I still feel like I completely understand how Texas high school football operates.
I mean, let’s not sell my credibility short — I have gone through all five seasons of Friday Night Lights with the Dillon Panthers and the East Dillon Lions multiple times. I get it. So when I saw this video of coach Richard Whitaker of Calhoun High School appearing to give the referee a hundred dollar handshake after a 43-20 win over Terry, I thought it was pretty par for the course for every team in the state with a coach not named Eric Taylor.

That’s just how big time high school programs roll. Did they even need some of the calls? Probably not. But what’s a few extra bones thrown towards the referees as insurance? Hiding in plain sight, in the middle of the field. Love it. Not like it’s his money anyway. Probably some Buddy Garrity type figure who owns a few local car dealerships funding the whole transaction. Can’t put a price on STATE! .
