Clemson Student Offended By Mexican Sombreros Turns Out To Be A Huge Hypocrite
Students at Clemson recently complained about the university’s dining hall using sombreros and festive decorations for a Mexican themed night. Now, when I say “students,” I mean only about two students, but it was enough to cause a campus wide conversation on Twitter with the hashtag #CUfiestafiasco and an eventual apology from the university.
Here’s the funny thing, though: One of the most vocal students offended by the dining halls’ alleged racist use of sombreros was totally cool with using sombreros and stereotypical Mexican imagery for a group of which she was the leader.
Clemson junior Mitzi Gamez tweeted the following, but has since deleted it:
She followed those comments up with an interview with student newspaper The Tiger News:
“They serve Mexican food all the time; that wasn’t the problem,” said junior general engineering major Mitzi Gamez, who serves as one of the co-presidents for the Latinos Unidos organization on campus. “It was the costumes and the way the students took that, like grabbing sombreros from workers and asking ‘Does this make me look illegal?’”
“I shouldn’t have to feel uncomfortable eating my lunch,” Gamez continued. “And I wasn’t the only one who felt that, but I was one of the ones able to voice my opinion effectively on social media.”
Strong words. Except, as the Badger Pundit points out, the Latinos Unidos club promoted Super Taco Night last year with a picture of a stereotypical Mexican in a sombrero holding tacos. Yes, Gamez was a part of the organization when that went down, too. She was also the treasurer at the time.
Hey everybody SACNAS has invited everyone to join them!!

Irony is awesome. In fact, the Badger Pundit captured a bunch of Gamez’s tweets and they’re all pretty awful.
The only good thing that came out of this “controversy” was getting to see Fox News/ National Review hottie Katherine Timpf scoff at how ridiculous it all is.
See how this fraternity managed to get out of trouble for their offensive party…

Wait a damn second, you mean to tell me that a libtard is being hypocritical?! Can’t say I’m surprised

11 years ago at 9:47 amYou are ASSUMING that all people can express the emotion of surprise when in reality some can’t… Not PC bro #deeply offended
Whoa whoa whoa buddy. Are you assuming that the struggles associated with feelings or lack thereof are limited to people? Ever considered what animals and plants go through on a daily basis? #checkyourprivilege

11 years ago at 9:32 amI’m an American baseball cap and I take offense to these Sombreros taking away American heads from firm fitting baseball caps.

As a snapback cap, I am offended by the cranial appropriation of the form fitters. Also please do not refer to us as ‘snapbacks’ (only we can say it), we are ‘Flat Brimmed Adjustable Notch Banded Headwear’. Thank you.

11 years ago at 9:41 amI’ll never understand how the world became so sensitive so quickly. 10 years ago, there would be gay jokes made a huge events like award shows(Jack Black) and everyone would laugh and have a good time. Now people are writing articles about how you might not want to be a leprechaun for Halloween, etc… Because it is offensive to that group of people.
11 years ago at 9:41 amDon’t think I have ever up voted one of your comments before now. But hell even a blind squirrel can find a nut.
11 years ago at 10:19 amAs a short person, I would be very offended if somebody dressed like a leprechaun.
11 years ago at 10:22 amIs dressing like a leprechaun offensive to midgets or irish people? Or both?
11 years ago at 1:42 pmIt’s offensive to Irish midgets who like to keep their life savings in gold formed stashed in pots at the ends of rainbows

11 years ago at 12:11 amI love the smell of SJW’s being called on their bullshit in the morning.
11 years ago at 9:42 amI don’t understand why people get offended when we imitate a culture. I wouldn’t be offended if they dressed up in suits and pretended to be white and successful.
11 years ago at 9:44 amthey call it cultural appropriation. if you don’t like a tradition of another culture then you’re a racist. if you do like it, you’re stealing their culture. either way, sjws will always be pissed about something.
11 years ago at 10:23 amJust going off of the other stuff she said, if that had been a white male, specifically a white male who was a part of a fraternity the university would either suspend or dismiss him just for the “offensive” tweets. This girl will get no reprimand for her offensive tweets other than being embarrassed by national media as an obvious hypocrite.
11 years ago at 11:39 amIs the dining hall on social probation?
11 years ago at 9:50 amI can only hope it’ll happen, food tastes like butthole post taco night.
11 years ago at 4:41 pmEating ass after taco night. It’s a TFM.
11 years ago at 12:10 amIf these students are ‘real’ Mexicans as they claim to be, shouldn’t they have a pair of cojones?
11 years ago at 10:02 amI’m the guy who outed Mitzi Gamez as a hypocrite. Only two students complained on social media, and Mitzi was the only Mexican. The other girl (who I haven’t yet named, but might do a post on) is from Venezuela. No guys complained. So no cojones!
