Clemson Student Offended By Mexican Sombreros Turns Out To Be A Huge Hypocrite

Students at Clemson recently complained about the university’s dining hall using sombreros and festive decorations for a Mexican themed night. Now, when I say “students,” I mean only about two students, but it was enough to cause a campus wide conversation on Twitter with the hashtag #CUfiestafiasco and an eventual apology from the university.

Here’s the funny thing, though: One of the most vocal students offended by the dining halls’ alleged racist use of sombreros was totally cool with using sombreros and stereotypical Mexican imagery for a group of which she was the leader.

Clemson junior Mitzi Gamez tweeted the following, but has since deleted it:

She followed those comments up with an interview with student newspaper The Tiger News:

“They serve Mexican food all the time; that wasn’t the problem,” said junior general engineering major Mitzi Gamez, who serves as one of the co-presidents for the Latinos Unidos organization on campus. “It was the costumes and the way the students took that, like grabbing sombreros from workers and asking ‘Does this make me look illegal?’”

“I shouldn’t have to feel uncomfortable eating my lunch,” Gamez continued. “And I wasn’t the only one who felt that, but I was one of the ones able to voice my opinion effectively on social media.”

Strong words. Except, as the Badger Pundit points out, the Latinos Unidos club promoted Super Taco Night last year with a picture of a stereotypical Mexican in a sombrero holding tacos. Yes, Gamez was a part of the organization when that went down, too. She was also the treasurer at the time.

Hey everybody SACNAS has invited everyone to join them!!

Irony is awesome. In fact, the Badger Pundit captured a bunch of Gamez’s tweets and they’re all pretty awful.

The only good thing that came out of this “controversy” was getting to see Fox News/ National Review hottie Katherine Timpf scoff at how ridiculous it all is.

See how this fraternity managed to get out of trouble for their offensive party…

I’ll take my laps for what I’m about to write, but Fuck these Latino union groups. I’m Hispanic and these democratic, liberal pussies want to get offended and discourage for every little Mexican related theme or a non Latino wearing something of their culture.

I could understand if the mexican club is full of bi-lingual mexicans actually born in mexico and the club exists to allows those folks to speak their native language to each other. I don’t think that’s the case here. These American “mexicans” get together find ways to get offended because people who get offended ALWAYS get their way and getting their way=power. It’s exclusively a power move. By the looks of this chick’s twitter account I’m gonna assume all the mexican club does is talk shit about non-mexicans and find the next thing to bitch about. I don’t know why these people act like the world is against them. You’re at a good school working towards your degree, you have the same rights as everyone else. Your little mexican club is not the fucking black panthers, stop being pussy loser creep fucks.

Thank you — I put a lot of work into that video. But I have to admit it was fun, too.

So can a Mexican never wear a sombrero? Can I offend myself by drinking tequila and wearing a sombrero with my mustache? Fuck theis PC bullshit. Schools are too lazy to deal with a grey area so they pull this stunt.
