An Average College Football Fan’s Prediction Of How The SEC East Will End Up
1. Georgia
Record: 10-3
Why: First year coach Kirby Smart spent a decade learning from the best in Tuscaloosa, and inherits a Georgia team stocked with talent from perennial 9.5 game per season winner Mark Richt. In perhaps some sad irony for fans of the much maligned new coach of the University of Miami, this season the Dawgs face the easiest road to the SEC Championship game in recent memory, as the perpetually stocked SEC West towers over the flailing East.
Freshman QB Jacob Eason, who has not yet been named the starter but is in a stronger leading position than Hillary Clinton post-California, was the consensus number one signal caller in the class of 2016; and early reviews have suggested he’s even better than the hype.
Now, if this was the SEC West, I would be extremely wary of relying on a freshman to lead my offense, even one as talented as Eason. However, the East defensively is closer to the historically awful Big 12 than the West division, and the stellar running back combo of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel should pace the inexperienced offense early.
Georgia finishes a very Mark Richt-esque first season for Kirby Smart 10-2, losing handily to his former boss in the SEC Championship game.
2. Tennessee
Record: 9-3
Why: I hate this pick for so many reasons I don’t even know where to start. First of all, Butch Jones, though a decent recruiter, does not belong in the SEC and showcases an in-game coaching ability (refer to Florida 2015) unmatched in ineptitude throughout the conference.
Even more concerning, I think the Vols start the season terribly. The early schedule is absolutely brutal, facing a decent Virginia Tech team out of conference, going to Athens to play Georgia, then to College Station and Texas A&M. Florida and the mighty Crimson Tide at home, too. To me, I’m thinking the Vols best case start 5-2, but most likely 4-3. The question here is can Butch Jones keep this young team together that year after year has heard “just wait ’til next year, we’re almost there” if they drop 3 early games?
If he can, the final 5 matchups on the Tennessee schedule are near locks. Tennessee Tech, Mizzou, Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Will Muschamp should pose little threat to the Volunteers, allowing for a strong close to the season, and another offseason of Butch Jones “waiting ’til next year.”
3. University of Florida
Record: 9-3
Why: So I want to start by saying unequivocally Florida is not good, and Jim McElwain is two years from being fired. With that in mind, this is an incredibly fortunate year for the Gators, as the schedule could not have set up better for at least a respectable run.
Florida does not play Alabama, Auburn, nor Ole Miss, and gets LSU at home. Coupled with a terrible out of conference slate aside from the annual matchup with FSU, and you can see a relatively easy path to 9+ wins for the 2015 SEC East champions.
Florida, as apparently is always the case, is completely without a quarterback. Treon Harris, the only Gator on the roster to have started a game at QB, made the Michigan defense look like the ’84 Bears in the Citrus Bowl (after the Wolverines had allowed 400 yards on the ground in a trouncing at the hands of Ohio State in their previous game) and has even LSU fans thinking “well, at least we don’t have him.”
Florida signed Feleipe Franks, an ESPN 300 overall QB that is described as “raw;” not exactly what you want in an SEC signal caller. A Purdue transfer, the absolutely terrible Austin Appleby joins the competition, but turning to him would be an admission of catastrophe on the part of the UF coaching staff with his abysmal Big 10 past.
The defense loses perhaps the best corner in the nation in Vernon Hargreaves, but will be one of the better units in the conference. The matchup between the Vols and Gators in Knoxville will decide second place.
4. South Carolina
Record: 8-4
Why: Again, it’s all about scheduling. I do think the Cocks will improve under first-year coach Will Muschamp. Frankly, the defense can’t possibly be any worse. The cupboard is not bare for the former Florida coach, and with an out of conference slate featuring 0 power five opponents outside of the annual rivalry with Clemson, the Cocks should start strong.
Muschamp is even more lucky with his in conference draw, getting Texas A&M and Mississippi State from the stacked West division. By no means locks, but both games are far more winnable than match ups with Alabama, LSU, and Auburn.
Mushcamp will have the defense to a point of at least respectability, but a lack of playmakers on offense outside of the do-everything Pharoh Cooper and no established QB, the Cocks will flounder in SEC play.
5. Kentucky
Record: 6-6
Why: Finally, Mark Stoops will make a bowl after winning 5 games repeatedly during his tenure in Lexington. In all honesty, nobody will give a fuck as the Wildcats basketball team begins practice in October and the season overlaps SEC play.
That’s the problem with Kentucky football. It is a curse being in the best conference in the nation and having an administration, and fan base, obsessed with another sport. I guess that’s what happens when you have John Calipari and an NBA roster in the next building all season long.
The Wildcats are ok, but they play Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and in-state rival Louisville, all of which are almost sure losses. Aside from that, the out of conference schedule is fairly weak, and Mississippi State is a best case scenario draw from the West. I see the Wildcats clawing their way to a bottom tier bowl, and perhaps saving the youngest Stoops from the chopping block.
6. Vanderbilt
Record: 5-7
Why: The record looks bad, but Coach Derek Mason is making significant progress in Nashville. Some may look at the results of former coach James Franklin and wonder why the Commodores have not returned to a bowl game, but recent reevaluations of questionable recruiting practices and mismanagement of the program under the previous regime should quell most qualms with Coach Mason & Co.
Mason is a defensive minded coach, emphasizing discipline and pressure to the tune of a respectable top 3 finish in QB pressures last season. It’s simply hard to recruit to Vanderbilt, with much higher academic standards than the rest of the SEC (*cough* Ole Miss *cough*) and a severe lack of funding.
I hope the administration gives Mason time, as I see a Jim Grobe at Wake Forest-type program in the future, perennial bowl berths, and respectability while adhering to strict Vanderbilt standards.
7. Missouri
Record: 5-7
Why: It’s been an awful year for Mizzou, and the football season will not grant any relief to the beleaguered fan base. The Tigers travel to West Virginia to start the season, probably with sophomore Drew Lock under center in front of the raucous Mountaineer crowd.
I expect losses to LSU, WV, Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, and South Carolina. The Tigers signed a pathetic recruiting class, no doubt the result of the turmoil surrounding the school and program after the abrupt resignation of Gary Pinkel and the political issues I have no interest in discussing.
It will be a long road back to respectability for the program, but 2016 will not be a pretty one..

This is spot on
10 years ago at 8:23 pmFlorida isn’t good and Mac is 2 years from getting fired? What the fuck are you smoking?
10 years ago at 8:27 pmAs a Florida fan, I can back up that we have a dumpster fire offense right now but Mac is nowhere near 2 years from being fired. I don’t know what makes you think that, but the Maceltrain is alive and chugging. He bring a strong, friendly personality to our Team that a lot of people enjoy. He is almost exclusively worshipped here in the ville.
10 years ago at 9:29 pmI mean two years after this upcoming season. I think he’s 4 and out. Reason I say that is I do not think he will find a qb during that time. I cannot stand Franks as a prospect, and think the kid that fits the system the best is committed elsewhere (McCaffrey)
Very hard to win in the sec without a qb, and I like Georgia a lot under smart and think the division in general is on the way up while Florida is stuck in neutral.
10 years ago at 9:32 pmLuke Del Rio is gonna be the starter next year. I’m not saying he’s a savior, but you didn’t even mention him so I’m not sure I’m buying what you’re selling
10 years ago at 10:23 pmRight the two time transfer former walk on. Nice
10 years ago at 11:34 pmWho played with our OC. Also we have Trask and Allen coming up so Franks might never play. Learn you shit.
10 years ago at 3:30 pmWe’ve had a hard time with QB’s lately. Big ears, big ears the 2nd, Grier, etc. and I think it it might be a problem with our coaching staff, not specifically mac. Doug Nussmeier is our offensive coordinator and qb coach and while he’s seen moderate success playing D1 and coaching for Alabama, I don’t think the lefty is a good fit for UF right now.
10 years ago at 1:50 amI just think that with driskel now showing promise elsewhere and the ultimately irrelevant inbetweeners from driskel to treon, we’ve wasted potential and not built our qb’s up to play against these tough SEC defenses.
10 years ago at 1:53 amWell most of that was Muschamp but Treon is by subtraction. Throw a WR in at QB and we’re still better than with Harris. And frankly I think you’re making a big mistake selling short Del Rio reunited with Nussmeier.
10 years ago at 3:29 pmJust because two people have been together before, which to be honest I didn’t know (shame on me).. Doesn’t mean they’ll perform well. Nussmeier had success at Alabama but has struggled since.
10 years ago at 6:58 pmHe was good last year when we had a competent QB.
10 years ago at 9:10 pmSo 4 and out?
9 years ago at 1:56 pmExactly what the fuck I’m saying! Florida wins the East
10 years ago at 11:42 pmEverything you said about Tennessee is completely wrong, every starter has played at least a full season, A&M has never beat a ranked team at home since joining the SEC, best rushing game in East and most dynamic offense in SEC
10 years ago at 8:30 pmMost underrated defense under Coach Schoop as well, one of the best DC’s in the nation with more talent to work with than he has ever had before.
10 years ago at 8:32 pmI agree that was a great hire saving him from the titanic in happy valley.
10 years ago at 8:34 pmThere is now way Tennessee doesn’t win the east this year. Their talent level is far above any of the competition, regardless of “Butch Jones’s incapability to coach in-game” which improves immensely game by game. He’s one of the hardest working coaches in the SEC despite not having some of the experience, and it’s gonna pay of this year. Just watch.
10 years ago at 8:31 pmWhat I’ve never understood about politics/sports discussion online is the idea anybody is going to change someone else’s mind.
What’s the best predictor of future behavior? Past. When the fuck has Tennessee been clutch since Fulmer was run out of town? When has Butch Jones managed a 4th quarter lead properly? It simply hasn’t happened.
Yea he’s recruited well, but so has Florida and Georgia. Shit, the Dogs might’ve had the best overall class in the nation outside of Tuscaloosa last year.
Dobbs is a great qb, but saying they have some superior talent level is insane.
10 years ago at 8:33 pmIm starting to think youre more than an “average college football fan” Siblings
10 years ago at 10:47 amYou’re gonna rank a team with a brand new coach and a true freshman starting quarterback as the best in the East? I’m sorry but there’s too many question marks there. I’d take Tennessee over Georgia even though both always make the next year “Their year”
10 years ago at 8:35 pmEason is not just some freshman, though. Kid is a flat out star. Aaron Murray was pretty damn successful his first year in Athens, and this time around Eason’s got the best running back combo in the nation to help him.
10 years ago at 8:37 pmTennessee cannot beat Florida because they are mentally weak Florida takes it and scores zero points in the loss to Alabama in the conference title game
10 years ago at 8:37 pmIf Nick Chubb is healthy and Eason is as good as advertised, UGA could be a sleeper this season.
10 years ago at 11:06 pmI understand you said “if,” but those are two HUGE ifs. That’s basically like saying IF I was a fighter pilot from the Vanderbilt family, I could pull IGBOTD quality chicks. Yeah. If.
10 years ago at 11:19 pmNo it’s not. Nick Chubb is practicing full contact and by all accounts Jacob Eason is actually better than advertised.
10 years ago at 6:54 amNick Chubb’s knee is more fucked up than a knee-grow’s checking account. And Eason is an unproven true freshman. I’m glad he’s “having a great spring,” but if I had a nickel for every player that had a great spring and blew dick in the fall, I wouldn’t work so damn hard.
10 years ago at 3:33 pmunrelated, but does anyone else wonder how every column ends up with 500+ likes no matter how shitty it is? seems fishy to me
10 years ago at 8:41 pmI don’t even think people actually like the articles at all, so over 500 in two hours is pure bullshit. We’re all a bunch of apathetic degenerates, we’re not gonna like a shitty article more than a great comment, and those rarely get over 200.
10 years ago at 10:43 pmThe number of people who read an article greatly exceeds the number of people who read the comments or bother to vote on the comments. I’m guessing the typical article gets 250,000 views (that’s probably conservative). If 500 people hit the like button, that’s only 0.2%. I’d be interested to know how many people read the comments (it can be tracked for the app, I’m not sure about the browser). Pretty sure it’s a low number compared to page views for the articles.
10 years ago at 5:54 amIt was tracked before. Dorn shared a whopping 0.1% ever scrolled to the comments.
10 years ago at 8:00 amWhich just means that all these commenters who rage about how having comments deleted/deactivated will cause the downfall of TFM, and about how the comments give TFM a significant revenue stream, are completely delusional.
10 years ago at 8:14 amTwitter, fb, instagram
10 years ago at 11:07 pmYou could have a cat shit on a piece of cardboard (equivalent to the typical Kramer Smash article), put it on the Internet, and there will be at least 500 idiots out there who will “Like” it.
10 years ago at 5:02 amPharoh Cooper plays for the LA Rams, might want to revisit that Scar prediction
10 years ago at 8:44 pmFuck Kroenke
10 years ago at 3:33 pmThank you for clarifying that Florida is in fact a university. I couldn’t tell which school you were talking about without that.
10 years ago at 9:16 pmI mean this year is Tennessee’s best chance to break out by far. Most talent we’ve had in a while, coaches in hot seat, especially oc. Things go right for once and there’s no way we don’t win the east
10 years ago at 9:19 pmYeah, once October everyone here in Lexington stops giving a fuck about football and gets ready for the only thing we actually win.
10 years ago at 10:51 pmKeeneland and basketball season
