“Anonymous” Hacker Group Releases Address Of ISIS Recruiter, Exposes Extremist Social Media

In response to the Paris terror attacks that left 129 dead, hacker group Anonymous declared war on ISIS, and they’ve already done some digital damage.

The hacktivists are compiling a list of Twitter accounts belonging to ISIS extremists in an attempt to have them taken down. They’ve even released the physical address of one ISIS recruiter in Europe.

In addition to outing the extremist’s social media accounts and personal information, Anonymous is also hacking their websites and shutting them down through a process known as distributed denial of service. Basically, Anonymous floods the servers with fake traffic from bots until they overload and crash.

Anonymous claims to have removed over 5,500 accounts of ISIS extremists over the years.

The group previously declared war on ISIS in January after the Charlie Hebdo massacre in France, but they seem to have ramped things up after the attacks last week.

It’s great to have the world turning its attention to wiping out ISIS, but allow me to play devil’s advocate here. Maybe Anonymous is fucking up the long game for the government counter-terrorism hackers by exposing who they’ve been tracking.

Hear me out. Is Anonymous really that much better at hacking and exposing ISIS than the French and American governments? Or were the government hackers refraining from exposing the accounts? Perhaps if they continued to track them quietly, it could lead to someone bigger, someone higher up on the chain of command.

What if shows and movies like Mr. Robot have over romanticized the power of these underground hacker organizations? What if Anonymous are just some neck beards in Guy Fawkes masks fucking everything up? If they’re such computer geniuses, wouldn’t they know that it’s impossible to exit out of the window that pops up on their video without clicking on the damn information button?

How? Why? Who? Where’s my tinfoil cap? HOW DO COMPUTERS EVEN WORK AND WHY WON’T MY LAPTOP COOK THE SLICE OF BOLOGNA I PUT IN THE DISC DRIVE? Illuminati.

I’ve said it before about Anonymous, and I’ll say it again. I’m not going to support one terrorist organization just because they’re going after another terrorist organization.

And if you don’t think that’s exactly what Anonymous is, you need to open your eyes.

Not if your enemy’s enemy is still a shitty entity that routinely disrupts other peoples access to peaceful, fulfilling way of life. Al Qaeda was our enemy’s enemy too. I assume you think they’re good guys?

They aren’t a terrorist group. You clearly need to open your eyes on this one chief.

They’ve interrupted government operations, interrupted several corporations’ ability to function, interfered with private services on a massive scale (such as when they hacked and shut down Sony’s online services for over a month, as well as accessing the financial data of millions of users, which may have had a prolific impact on their real-world lives as well), threatened serious violence against law enforcement officials, released countless files of very sensitive, potentially endangering information, and much more.

If they aren’t terrorists, do tell, what are they? They may not be blowing themselves up at a soccer match in the name of religious dominance, but don’t confuse them for good people.

It’s called exposing government and corporate lies through undeniable proof. I’m guessing you supported bailing out those trustworthy bankers? They exposed flaws in systems that these companies claimed were bulletproof. Blame Sony for failing to keep your info safe. Blame Visa for their static “security.” Quit being a dumbass.

My bad, I forgot terrorism was a game of inches, and that crime was a matter of degree. The occasional altruistic act does not excuse a long history of illegal, harmful, dangerous activity. If a serial killer volunteers at a soup kitchen on Wednesdays, does that suddenly absolve them?

You can still dislike companies for having a flawed service without excusing the criminal activity that exposed it, or the criminal intent that motivated those acts.. You can still criticize the government and its practices, while condemning the endangerment of government and peacekeeping officials.

I do like the banking straw man though. Hat tip to your freshman speech professor for that one.

Wow, we’re going to have to invent a new word to describe this stretch of the imagination because “metaphor” sure as hell doesn’t cut it.

They are seen as “vigilantes”. Yes governments and corporations can be label them as terrorists, and some of their protests can get criminal very quickly. However, anonymous has no formal leadership or even formal members. It is a group of people doing what they feel is right, and doing what governments can’t.

Exactly, they aren’t good people, they are some shady nerds who decided fighting child rapists and terrorists was more important than getting laid. We aren’t selling them ammo or anything, just pulling for them to kick those goat fuckers where the sun don’t shine.

Bank leaves safety boxes unlocked, cuts security staff to save money. Criminal breaks in, steals shit, gets away. Bank tells customers they’ve added security to prevent future occurrences. Vigilante exposes bank’s lie and shows there’s no additional security. And you want us to be mad at the vigilante? If a corporation can’t exist without lying or breaking federal regulations, then it shouldn’t exist in the first place. You sure as hell didn’t pass your business ethics class.

Terrorism: The use of violence and intimidation for political aims.

I’ve yet to see Anonymous killing anyone or doing anything violent.

I guarantee the government had tabs on these people. I think anonymous exposing them and likely forcing them to relocate probably set our efforts back a bit.
