I realize that its more of a joke, but if you dont wear waders, the fish can smell you in the water, and they stay far the fuck away… Same thing goes with tyin on a lure after puttin in a pinch, they wont go for anything that smells like tobacco. Unfortunately, they’re a lot smarter than you think. Just a little tip for ya.
You sir are a dumbass. First, it’s a fly not a lure. Second, Iv thrown in lips right before tying on nymphs and still hooked up with trout. Obviously your lack of water reading skills, fly selection, and/or technique are keeping you from the fish, not the dip.
Citadel is right on here. Fish are smart but if you’re doing it correctly you’re downstream from them so scent isn’t really a factor. I’ve never had a problem with dip either.
its hard to measure, and yeah skill is a lot more important, but I’m just sayin, it aint helpin your case. I was part of a graduate ichtyology student’s study on the effects of scent on recreational fishing, and your body secretes L-serine, which is an amino acid secreted through the skin of predatory mammals, and fish instinctively become more wary and more likely to prioritize defense and shelter. We got the same results with tobacco, sunscreen, and bugspray. And they can detect L-serine in moving water in quantities of as little as 1 part per 8 billion in moving water, even if you’re downstream. So no I’m not a dumbass, I watched it scientifically proven with my own eyes in someones master’s thesis. So yes, there are much more important aspects in strategy, and it’s not a 100% barrier, if even 5%, I was just tryin to point that out. Sorry bout the paragraph but the research proved that yeah, it does matter, even if only a little bit.
