VIDEO: JuCo Player Bernard Schirmer KOs Ref Mid-Game With One Punch, Is Promptly Arrested
Mt. San Antonio College lineman Bernard Schirmer is facing a five-year ban from the California Community College Athletic Association for this following incident where he knocked out a referee.
That’s a massive offensive lineman striking an old man half his size. Is that ref dead? You just can’t do that, big fella. Shocked this didn’t happen in the Oklahoma State-Central Michigan Game. But then again, maybe Oklahoma State realized they shouldn’t have intentionally grounded that ball.
According to NBC Los Angeles, Bernard was arrested on the field for suspicion of felony battery. He was released on bail Sunday morning. The school reviewed the video and claim that the incident was an accident.
Apparently, Bernard likes to hit himself in the helmet to calm himself down, and that’s what he was doing in this situation and just connected with the ref on the follow-through. After watching the tape again, I can kind of see it. He makes contact with his helmet before striking the ref.
Which is a good thing for the ref or else we might actually be talking about a murder..

8 years ago at 7:45 pmWhatever happened to the high school players who attacked a ref last year?
8 years ago at 10:28 amI know one of their coaches was charged (he apparently actually put them up to it). No idea if convictions followed. I don’t think the kids got in serious legal trouble either. Which I guess makes sense if coach told em to do it.
8 years ago at 11:10 amIDK, “coach told me so” isn’t an excuse for battery. Plus the coach recanted his statement that he’d ordered it once he realized there were consequences.
8 years ago at 1:06 pmIf they were adults I would fully agree. I’m not saying don’t punish them, but when a couple of minors listen to a coach/school employee in the heat of the moment (like they’ve been told to do their whole lives), ehh.

8 years ago at 11:53 amSo I came here to write a simple TNM, but then I saw it was an O-lineman and the name was inconclusive. A quick Google search brought up a strange looking swarthy fellow of indeterminate racial background. So long story short I’m sticking with TNM. And yes I realize this will be lapped for being both racist and a retarded comment.
