Beta Theta Pi at Wesleyan University is Known as the “Rape Factory” Because People Get Raped There

A factory, by definition, is a structure where a product(s) is manufactured. Based on this knowledge, I am to assume the members of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Wesleyan University are just in there cooking up some rape – just sharing rape strategies, plotting advantageous rape scenarios, identifying potential rape victims, studying the local rapee demographic, then of course making the rape happen with actual rapes. Sick people.

Two Halloweens ago they were open for business, and the Rape Factory claimed another victim. She has been identified only as “Jane Doe,” and last Friday she filed a lawsuit against the university for “violating Title IX, the federal gender-equity law, by failing ‘to supervise, discipline, warn or take other corrective action’ against the Mu Epsilon chapter of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, actions that it says could have prevented the assault. The lawsuit says the student was raped.”

In the lawsuit, Beta Theta Pi is depicted as a troubled place with “a long-documented history of dangerous misconduct, student injuries and numerous sexual assaults of women.” The lawsuit says the chapter lost its recognition from Wesleyan as a student organization in 2005 and instead gained “the reputation in the Wesleyan community as the ‘Rape Factory.'”

As if the ominous moniker wasn’t an adequate deterrent, Wesleyan University even warned Rape Factory goers about the dangers of visiting the Rape Factory.

The lawsuit says that Wesleyan warned students in an email in March 2010 to stay away from the fraternity, saying that the school “could not ensure students’ safety on the premises.”

Dang. It’s clear rape was a pretty serious issue with this chapter. It begs the question of why this raping brotherhood was allowed to continue on with their raping reign of terror.

After Jane Doe was raped, the horror continued, as she faced ridicule and intimidation around campus because of the sexual assault allegations. Language in the lawsuit describes her as “‘an exceptional student’ in math, science and music ‘before the rape’ — [she] secluded herself and hid in her room, missing classes and meals, the lawsuit says. She eventually withdrew from Wesleyan and transferred to another school, said Timothy O’Keefe, of Kenny, O’Keefe & Usseglio of Hartford, who represents the woman.”

The man accused of the assault, John O’Neill of Yorktown, N.Y., was not a Wesleyan student and was “a guest of a Beta member” that weekend, according to the lawsuit. He was originally charged with first-degree sexual assault, according to a Courant news report. He is currently serving a 15-month prison sentence at Osborn Correctional Institution.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in the Rape Factory, rape a chick. Am I right, Johnny? We make jokes, but rape isn’t funny. At all. In fact, it’s terrible.

According to Martin Cobb, director of communications for the general Beta Theta Pi fraternity, “the Mu Epsilon chapter, at 184 High St., is currently a fully operating chapter in ‘good standing,’ recognized by Wesleyan, with its members having a grade point average of 3.57. He said the 64-member fraternity recently inducted new members.”

At this point I’m starting to believe TFM is just going to write news just because it involves a fraternity. Do you think we give a shit about a fraternity rape factory? The butt chugging news was funny but jesus, be more selective in the quality in which you write about, rather than the quantity. You would learn that if you majored in journalism, Dorn.

Why would TFM ever report news involving fraternities? You, sir, need to take a lap.

I don’t have a problem with the story itself, since this IS a section on fraternity news on what is arguably the most popular fraternity-oriented site on the Internet – but what worried me here is the sensationalism that the headline implies. The last thing TFM needs is to turn into GreekRank – “Bumfuck State Fijis Make Their Pledges Fuck Watermelons”, etc. Admittedly that would be a pretty funny article that I would definitely read, but you can see how it would be a dangerous trend.

As a Beta, I’m horrified that this was allowed to continue. Our national’s really should have dealt with this when it happened, not send out some bullshit email.

No Betas were involved. Can you control every single person in your house at all times? If you say yes you probably have a chapter of less than twenty people.

Rape is terrible but I’m not gonna lie… I laughed so hard at the repeated use of the term “rape factory”

Wesleyan is probably the gayest, most liberal school in America. It should burn
