Bill Simmons Ripped “Mike & Mike” A New Asshole, Likely Heading For Another Suspension
I’ve made no secret about the fact that I’m a fan of Bill Simmons’ work, so take pretty much all of my “reporting” here with a grain of salt. Fresh off his three-week suspension for taking a shot at the king (Roger Goodell), Simmons is back and stirring up controversy already. In this scenario, however, Bill wasn’t exactly the instigator. Simmons went on Colin Cowherd’s radio show earlier today, and in the course of conversation, he made the point that LeBron hasn’t looked the same this season. He compared LeBron to Albert Pujols’ move to the Angels and commented on the drop-off in production we saw. He couched all of this by saying, “It’s really early to say this, so please, sports blogs and people, don’t throw this in my face.” Hell, he even called out Colin saying Dion Waiters should be traded as “one of the great jump-to-conclusion rants I’ve heard in recent ESPN history,” and clarified even further that you need at least 20 games played before you can begin to draw any useful conclusions about a team or a player.
Later, on “Mike & Mike,” Mike Golic decided he was not too happy about Simmons’ early judgment of LeBron.
Golic, of course, neglects to give any context whatsoever, and it seems odd to call out another ESPN personality on-air, especially by calling him a “headline grabber.” Isn’t that exactly what you’re doing, Golic? I found the whole thing laughable, especially given that Mike Golic knows jack shit about basketball.
Anyway, Simmons had some thoughts on the matter:
What Mike and Mike did today was absolute garbage. I would say I lost respect for that show, but I never had it. http://t.co/LRd8YzFfO8

For an ESPN Radio show to pull an interview out of context from another ESPN Radio show, then play the moral authority card, is disgusting.

Have the balls to call me to discuss it on the show. Don't pull it out of context just because you need fodder for a segment. Pathetic.

But hey – I'm just a guy who can't evolve, right? http://t.co/XJ0GWbc5gJ

Now, even though I’m fully on Simmons’ side on this one, it does seem a bit thin-skinned to just go off on Twitter. It’s not that he’s wrong, it’s just not a good look. Smug eye-rolling is always a more superior reaction than shrill-toned ranting. Plus, let’s be honest, calling it “disgusting” is a bit hyperbolic, wouldn’t you say? Either way, I’m intrigued to see how all of this plays out. In the immortal words of Jalen Rose, “Don’t get fired, Bill.”
Although I think in this case, many of Bill’s readership would welcome a split with the hype factory/echo chamber that is ESPN..

Bill Simmons coming of a suspension then stirring up more controversy, it’s a TFM
11 years ago at 5:56 pmI’ve never been a fan of Simmons, but I have respect for the fact that he took his undeserved suspension and still didn’t give a fuck, and changed nothing. ESPN is complete garbage now, except SVP and Chris Evertt(?)

11 years ago at 7:31 pmI don’t like Simmons either, and I think he looks like a tiny penis, but I absolutely love that he doesn’t give a fuck about anything or anyone. Props in that regard.
11 years ago at 7:36 pmYa there’s no way he’s coming back to ESPN after his contract is up. If he makes it to then.
11 years ago at 7:34 pmYour reporting is taken with a grain of salt no matter what the topic, sterling.
11 years ago at 8:26 pmI thought we agreed we were going to stop talking about african tree hockey.
11 years ago at 8:31 pmI don’t recall making that agreement.

11 years ago at 1:24 amThis is like a chapter getting suspended for hazing, then coming right back post-suspension with a good ole’ fashioned dead pledge
11 years ago at 8:34 pmThe good ole’ fashioned dead pledge. You gotta kill one every now and then to let the others know it’s a possibility.
