Bowling Green Sig Ep Is Running For City Mayor On The Side While Taking Classes
A Bowling Green Sig Ep is running an election campaign, not as a candidate for student body president, but for mayor of the entire town. Dan Phillips, a construction management senior at BGSU, will be on the ballot as an independent this upcoming November.
From The Sentinel-Tribune:
An active member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, Phillips served as president of the interfraternity council for over a year, and has served on other committees in the Greek community at the university; he will shortly be volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. In addition, Phillips played football his freshman year as a long snapper, and has also played a variety of intramural sports.
It’s his engagement with the university and other highly-involved students that sparked Phillips’ run for mayor.
“The idea of presenting a student candidate isn’t a new one,” he said. “There’s not only myself running for mayor but also two students running for city council,” and said that there was a conversation going on that students should present a mayoral candidate.
“We make up over half the population (of the city). After conversations with numerous students, we decided it was time that we present a candidate to represent the student body, because we haven’t done much over recent years to represent ourselves at the city level” in city politics.
“We have a duty to represent ourselves and that we care” about the city and its well-being, he said. Phillips added he doesn’t feel the city is doing a poor job, but that students need to be “making sure that we are part of those discussions.”
Fuck it, why not? There’s like, what, fifteen people in the city of Bowling Green other than students and faculty? And they all probably work for the school, too. Worse case scenario, he screws up the budget and they run out of money before the annual Christmas Bazaar or they have to cut back spots with the weekly Sunday farmer’s market. It’s a travesty, I know, but it might be a worthy risk. So long as he doesn’t pull a Ben Wyatt and spearhead the development of an “Ice Town” causing the city to go bankrupt, Dan should be able to hold it down.
Not to mention, being president of IFC should be more than enough experience. The amount of damage control he dealt with on a day to day basis far exceeds any “problems” he’ll ever endure as mayor..
